World's First Dry-Tooling Comp' For Glasgow
Indoor competition climbing with a twist of ice pick in crack as Scotland hosts the world's first indoor dry-tooling competition next month. How sensible is that?

Here's an event for you and possibly a comment on the paucity of
proper Scottish winter conditions over recent years - Glasgow is to
stage what's thought to be the world's first ever dry-tooling
competition.
Due to be held at the Glasgow
Climbing Centre on 8 March, the competition will combine
top-roped and bouldering problems for teams of three with separate
classes for professional and sponsored climbers and normal
people.
The event's been organised by leading Scottish climber Scott Muir,
is sponsored by a host of top UK brands and has a limited number of
spaces. So if you fancy scratching your way up plastic, get over to
Scott's site at www.scottmuir.com
for more details, or simply e-mail
Scott direct.
What is dry tooling? Thought you'd never ask. Basically it's
climbing rock with ice axes and crampons. If that sounds daft, it is,
a bit, but it's developed from mixed and icefall climbing where
climbers often have to cover ground that is esentially rock before
getting back onto ice and from modern mixed horrors in the Cairngorms
that are often snowed-up rock.
If that sounds precarious, it is, and torquing on an axe pick can
be the prelude to an adze in the face if your tool pops... Mad stuff
really, but definitely worth a look if you're up that way.
