Rather improbably, Yorkshire
now has its very own Dolomites-style via ferrata with iron cables and
ladders and chains allowing you to get a unique new perspective on the Stean Gorge in Nidderdale.
One of only two via ferratas in England - the other is at the Honister
mines in the Lakes - Stean Gorge is a limestone fissure in the rocks
set amongst the greenery of the the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding
Beauty, just outside Pateley Bridge.
Privately run as How Stean Gorge, it offers abseiling, gorge scrambling
and caving and there are paths and footbridges, giving easier access
around the steep-sided ravine. Camping facilities, bike hire
and a fully licensed restaurant are also on offer.
Stan and Ann Beer have run How Stean Gorge for two years both having
worked in the health service, so medical help is always close at hand.
“The via ferrata is adding an exciting new element for those who want
to push themselves a bit further and explore parts of the gorge that
would otherwise be inaccessible," says Stan.
“This experience is not for the unfit or faint hearted, but it’s
certainly worth the effort. We’re an obvious choice for regular outdoor
adventure enthusiasts but we are geared up for others too.
School adventure parties, corporate team building events and even
pre-wedding parties are all regulars here and if it’s raining even
better!”
Groups of six are escorted round the via ferrata by a qualified
instructor which takes approximately three hours. It is open
all year round – whatever the weather - and costs £45 per
person. For bookings and more information call 01423 755666 or go to www.howstean.co.uk.
