We told you about Alastair Lee's new book 'Forgotten Landscape' the
other week - see
this
article which also has details of the exhibition and the DVD, but
we thought you might like to see a few of the images and find out
what we made of it.
Why 'Forgotten Landscape'? Alastair's local area, around Pendle
and Burnley, sits in the middle of an unholy triangle of peak, dales
and lakes and, as a result, tends to be overlooked, except by those
who live there. The book's a visual celebration of this quietly
beautiful area.
You can see it in a wider context too. It doesn't matter how many
exotic foreign mountain ranges and mad landscapes you experience,
your local surroundings still retain the power to surprise, to jump
up and sink their teeth into your butt and growl, hey, look at me. It
comes with the changing of the seasons and the games light plays with
colours. And in a sense, this book is about that too.
So what's it like? Quietly stunning we'd say and quintessentially
English. The book, says Alastair, is aimed mainly at those, like
himself, who cherish the local Lancashire landscape. But even if you
don't know the area, 'Forgotten Landscape' is still undeniably
beautiful.
The
Book is simply divided into basic categories - 'Flora', 'Pendle
Hill, 'The Moors', 'Pastoral' and 'Reservoirs' and the quality of
paper and reproduction are both excellent. There are a few words too,
but mostly the pictures are left to speak for themselves.
The Pictures We liked Alastair's previous book 'Eyes Up' for its
sense of playfulness and some stunning big landscape and climbing
shots. The pictures in 'Forgotten Landscape' are still beautifully
observed, but somehow more intimate and familiar. Which is what you'd
anticipate really. The nice thing is that you can sense Alastair's
love for his local landscape through the pictures.
There are some fantastic, atmospheric shots of moors, reservoirs,
flora and more with some lovely low-light and saturated colours, but
what the heck, here are a few images from the book to give you a
proper idea of what they look like...
Lovely. Atmospheric, intimate, beautiful. You can buy the book from,
erm, bookshops - hopefully amazon will be stocking it soon,
alternatively, e-mail Alastair via the Posing Productions web site
link below and he'll sort something out.
