If you must have a map case - and let's face it, unless you use
laminated maps in this country you must - there is only one choice:
Ortlieb. While other cases cost half as much, they're cracking and
leaking while the Ortlieb soldiers on regardless.
It is simply quite mad. Poor old Lyon Equipment, who import the
things from Germany, joke that they only ever sell one per customer
as they last forever, and they're right. My original is still going
strong after about ten years, the only sign of age being a yellowing
of the plastic, which otherwise remains the tough, flexible, tear
proof thing it always was.
Why's it so good? It's dead tough, it has a slightly sticky feel
to it which prevents compasses from sliding around when you're taking
bearings or maps from slipping around within the case and your hands
grip it too. Then there's the waterproof seal, a double roll over,
Velcro-fastened top which really works.
Comes in three sizes - the OS one is best as it takes both
1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps. The slightly smaller A4 version will hold
a folded 50,000 but not a 25,000. Plus you can use them to hold
guidebooks, notes or anything else that needs to stay bone dry,
including mobile phones.
No, they're not cheap, but they are fantastic value.

Verdict: We can't believe anyone
buys any other map case. The absolute cartographical
protection business.

Pushed for time:
Tough, flexible, almost indestructible. Compasses don't
slide on them, they're totally waterproof and they last for
years with only a slight yellowing to give their age away.
Fantastic product.
