Paramo Velez Jacket

Price: £160.00

Weight: 897g (medium, includes stuff sack)

Features: Nikwax Analogy fabric combination with TX10i Elastomer treatment, roll-away and detachable hood, reflective pipng front and rear, twin front zips plus deep neck zip, scooped back and 2-inch drip skirt. One internal and one external pockets, both fit OS maps. Stuff sack has straps for use as daysack.

The damp looking patches are, in fact, damp patches, but
that's what you get for biking on a foul Peak afternoon in
October. A far cry from Bogota where Paramo kit is made
but please don't try to smoke the lining...

Paramo clothing is an acquired taste - think whelks, oysters, snails even and you won't go far wrong. The company's spent years trying to explain how it works and still not quite managed to get the message over which, in turn, doesn't really matter because it does.

The acquired taste bit comes from the feel. The lining bit of the two part Analogy system - the one they used to say was like animal fur - actually feels like one of your mum's old housecoats, remember them? The outer too is much softer than normal Nylon-based shell garments. They feel nice, work well, breathe better than most things on the market, but the problem has always been that they're too warm and too heavy.

So has Paramo cracked it with the lighter weight, multi-activity Velez smock? Well, it still weighs in at a not inconsiderable 897g or so, about twice the weight of a Berghaus PacLite or Craghoppers Pakka jacket and that's despite a snug, short cut, so it's definitely a case of lighter rather than light.

Side vents do an excellent job
off keeping you cool, but
we had some minor leaks.

Meanwhile it's still a touch on the warm side for year round use. That lining may whisk sweat away from the skin, but it's also capable of producing a fair bit when the sun's out. The deep neck zip and side vents help, especially when moving fast, but we still found it a bit toasty in mild to warm conditions.

In cooler situations the Velez is excellent. It's waterproof in the sense that the water never reaches your skin through the fabric, whatever the technicalities and the Analogy system transports moisture away from the skin effectively. The cut is excellent for mountain biking and running, though perhaps a little short for walking and the roll-down detachable hood offers surprisingly good protection and has a wired peak.

We liked the way the cuffs could be left loose, loose enough to roll up to the elbow in fact, or cinched down and the venting is good. We did have one minor problem, in driven rain coming at you from the side, one of the body vents leaked enough to allow a trickle of icy water through. We'd like to see these with an external baffle to offer more protection than the current single layer behind the zip.

Finally, the mags keep whining about reproofing Paramo kit, but a quick session with the washing machine's no great problem for normal people...

Verdict: Excellent breathability and comfort, but you pay for it with increased weight and warmth, which means it's not a practical all-year round option. Short, close, cut works well for biking and running but not so great for walkers. Detailing is generally excellent and not always obvious - for example the single-hand adjustable pullers throughout. Great for winter mountain biking, but it would have to be desperately cold before we'd contemplate running in a Velez. Not cheap either at £160.

Pushed for time: Lighter than the usual Paramo stuff but still not that light. Breathabilitry and warmth are excellent as are the cut and detailing for biking, running and other active use. A little short for most walkers though. We had minor leaks through one of the handy and effective side vents, but otherwise no problems. In mild to warm weather it's simply too warm for high intensity activities - ironic given the design - but in cool conditions it's a good 'un. Quite expensive at £160. Quite heavy at almost 900g.
