 | | | Question: I suffer excessive pain in my knees when i'm coming down of steep inclines can you recommend any brand of insoles? Answer: Hi there,
The name is Gear, Richard Gear and you've just opened a very large can
of worms. Or two in fact.
First, some sort of insole may help you, but there's absolutely no
guarantee – brands like Superfeet and Sole are both decent, personally
I find Sole footbeds more comfortable because they have a softer upper
surface, but really they're just slightly stable alternatives to
standard footbeds and they may not make any difference at all.
It all depends on what's causing your knee pain and it could be many
things ranging from a bio-mechanical imbalance causing misalignment of
your leg joints, through to something like a muscular weakness or even
deterioration in the joint.
By all means try an aftermarket footbed – Superfeet has a money-back
guarantee period – and see if that helps, but if it doesn't, get
specialist advice. A sports podiatrist would be a good start for
biomechanical issues, they'll video you on a treadmill to pin-point any
issues or a physio or simply start with your GP.
One other solution you might consider if you're not using them already,
is a pair of trekking poles. There's a lot of anecdotal evidence that
they can help with knee and leg pain generally by taking some of the
load off your joints and helping with balance, so I'd definitely
consider trying them if you haven't already.
Good luck with your knees,
Yours wormily
Richard G
