The best map in the world isn't much use after it's been reduced to papier mache by a day's persistent rain. A map case spares you taking compass bearings on a piece of wet pulp, if you don't fancy forking out for ready-laminated maps in the first place. Options included cases that dangle round your neck or those that attach to your waist belt; transparency on one side or both sides; and compass pockets. The best bit is that this is your one piece of outdoor gear, other than your Mars bar, that isn't expensive:-).
