'FLAWED'
Strengths:
Dry warm feet in all conditions. Good grip, good support.
Weaknesses:
Fitting is a problem.
Overall:
Used on and off for five years in various guises. Excellent boots for two hours, then they constrict my feet and I can't walk in them. Yes, I did try them in a shop. Yes, they are the right size. Yes, I probably am pedally odd. Excellent but expensive for what I can use them for.

'GREAT BOOT'
Strengths:
Comfort, rigidity and versatility
Weaknesses:
Soles not as grippy as others that I have owned.
Overall:
Extremely happy with my purchase. Although I have not tried these out in the most demanding of situations yet they have given me confidence that they will be able to tackle all that a UK winter could throw at me. The ankle flex adds to the comfort but can make the boot feel a little loose unless tied very tightly - something my ice cold hands found a little fiddly.

'NOT FOR ME'
Strengths:
Good solid construction
Weaknesses:
Personally, i found the boot too hard for distances. I have had many boots, none have given me troubles with my Knees but these. persisted and ended up with ITB problems and physio advised ditching them.

They are also quite heavy when they eventually do take up water.

Overall:
I know people who have got on with them and love them but they beat me.

'A GOOD, SOLID BOOT'
Strengths:
Good ankle support.
Easy lacing.
Excellent build quality.
Takes Grivel G12 crampon no bother.
You get what you pay for.
Weaknesses:
A little narrow across the toes for my liking.
Vibram sole slips easily on thin ice/hard packed snow.
Overall:
Though they are a little narrow across the toes for my liking (my previous boots were Brasher Hillmasters; lots of room) I found these boots to be very comfortable and I’ve had no trouble with them so far.

They appeared to require no “breaking in”; I wore them around the house for two or three hours for a few days and went for a couple of short walks in them before taking them on the hill however my impression was that they’d have been fine straight out of the box.

When I bought the boots I replaced the insoles with Superfeet; I haven’t tried the boots with the original insoles yet.

I bought the boots for winter hill walking in Scotland; they performed well during a recent Winter Skills course in the Cairngorms, keeping my feet warm and dry. I have used a pair of Grivel G12 crampons on the boots; the crampons fitted easily, did not move about and could be put on and taken off quite easily.

I feel that the Manta M4’s are over the top for most Scottish summer walking, they are classed as mountain boots after all and for this I’ll continue to use my Brasher’s.

A tall tail to finish: I wear a cross and chain around my neck; the cross measures 4x3 cm. Whilst attending a Winter Skills course I went to bed and placed my glasses, watch and my cross and chain into one of my trainers. When I dressed in the morning I forgot to take the chain out of my trainers. As a result it stuck to my sock and was still there when I put my boots on when we arrived at the car park. It was only when I took my boots off that I found the chain and cross attached to my sock just behind the inside ankle ball; I had spent a day on the hill and never noticed that I had the cross and chain in my boot other than thinking at one point that there might have been a small piece of grit in my boot! I’m thinking of writing to Scarpa to compliment them on the comfort qualities of their boots!

'ROCK SOLID ON ROCK'
Strengths:
Comfortable straight out of the shop, not a single blister (yet anyhow), fantastic for scrambling.
Weaknesses:
Seems to give me a slightly sore left knee at the end of a long day - I think they hold my ankle slightly straighter than my old boots did. I'm sure I'll adjust!
Overall:
The build is rock solid, walking action is good, great for rocky days out. Good platforms for toe and edge holds. Great product.
