'CHEAP, HARD WEARING AND PRACTICAL.'
Strengths:
Hard wearing. Comfortable fit. Good pockets.
Dries very quickly.
Weaknesses:
Quite close fitting so get the right size for you.
Belt holes are buttoned on so can come loose after a while which can be slightly annoying.
Overall:
Well worth the pittance. Can be used for any outdoor activity.
Hardwearing and relatively breathable.

'lightweight, easy to wash and dry, easy to pack, cool '
Strengths:
lightweight, lots of handy pockets including a map size one on the leg, easy to wash and dry, dry out well when get wet, buttons are sturdy, hard wearing and cool to where, they take up very little room in a pack.
Weaknesses:
colours limited only to green and camouflage!!
Overall:
Brilliant, not expensive at all and do the job, else the army would not be so keen on them. Forget branded clothing try these!

'BE CAREFUL WHICH YOU CHOOSE!'
Strengths:
*Real* L/W Trousers - polycotton, hard wearing, light! dry quickly.
Combat Trousers - Really hard wearing, huge twin map pockets.
Weaknesses:
*Real* L/W Trousers - Map pocket on leg too small, - green!
Combat Trousers - DPM (Camo - colour)
Overall:
Be careful what you buy, the proper LightWeight Trousers are the ones the army uses/used for physical activity and everyday wear. They are olive green and will have a strange size code on the label e.g 108-80-100, civilian copies will have a 'normal' size.
Combat trousers are Camo coloured, all cotton for fire safety, and were produced in lots of different patterns dependent on the year of manufacture, the oldest 1960's patterns are too heavy, the 80's versions will fall off you in weeks, the latest 'Combat '95' type are the most suitable for outdoor use.
I wore them for 14 years professionally and would never be seen in any of them again. Buy Ron Hills or Rohan-a-likes depending on your need! :)

'THEY COVER MY LEGS.'
Strengths:
Cheap
More windproof than tracksters.
Map pocket on leg will take a laminated OS map.
Warmish when wet and dry quickly when it gets dry again.
Weaknesses:
Change falls out of the patch pockets when you sit down in the pub.
Er, that's all.
Overall:
Mine are the polycotton version and it seems an ideal material for going all over the British hills year round. They're hardwearing, dry quickly, windproof enough, the pockets are OK and my leg pocket takes a map easily while keeping it out of the way of pack straps, etc.

Mine were definitely a bargain cos I was given them by an retired army bloke who was sick of being seen in them. They don't hold that stigma for me and so they've been ideal. My only problem is that he had only one pair to give me.

If you come across a pair try 'em. If you don't like them send them to me.

'COMFORTABLE TOUGH AND LIGHT'
Strengths:
Hardwearing lightweight(!) trousers, comfortable to wear, dry quickly with adequate pockets.
Weaknesses:
The obvious one is green and military but that shouldnt deter you.........if they're good enough for our army they're good enough for me (twisters are a must)..........oh and the only belt that'll fit them is a webbing one!
Overall:
Very cheap(make sure they're original - there's a lot of copies out there), adequate pockets, plenty of comfort and maneuvrability but snug at the same time..........you cant go far wrong with these!

'BRILLIANT!!!'
Strengths:
Lightweight, comfortable, cheap!!
Weaknesses:
Can wear out if used lots, but that doesnt matter if you compare them to the price.
Overall:
I use these trousers and i replace them every year (because they get too small), but i have never had a problem with them.

'CHEAP, PRACTICAL,LIGHT AND COMFORTABLE'
Strengths:
Very practical, quick drying, VERY cheap, light and hard wearing, but only if you buy the right ones!!!
Weaknesses:
The colour
Overall:
Make sure you get the right ones. Some surplus stores and ebay sellers sell cheaper and much inferior lightweights! The best ones in my opinion are made by J Compton Sons & Webb Limited. These will take a shed load of abuse before they wear out.
