'BETTER THAN MOST BERGENS, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS IT SOUNDS!'

Strengths:
Great comfort....running out of things to say already. I suppose the pockets are relatively well designed. It is a gd technical pack.

Weaknesses:
It is far too heavy before anything is put inside of it. It is mostly waterproof but the back plate isnt so everything gets wet anyway (very intelligent design...NOT). Not particularly durable, mine has fairly severe wear on hips straps and ive only used it on a handful of expeditions. I also have the old version rather than the new one which is probably a substantial improvment, or had better be. For what it is id say it is a bit pricey as well.

Overall:
Not a bad pack. Will see you through almost any expedition as long as you are willing to fork out the money for it, and endure the extra weight from the back system. Make sure you dont fall for the "waterproof" malarky! Your stuff will get wet! Despite its downfalls, im not sure that there is a much a better pack on the market without going into ex-military bergens. It has served me well! It would get a 5 for loyalty.

'NOT CONVINCED'

Strengths:
The Bio-Flex back system is truly revolutionary. When strapped tightly to the body it is as comfortable as any pack I've carried with a heavy load.

Weaknesses:
It is not waterproof by any stretch of the imagination. Two hours of walking in light to medium rain and everything inside mine was saturated. That was with all the straps and zips tightly closed. Place your kit inside waterproof bags.
It is a very heavy pack when empty due to the back system.
I don't like the fold over bottom section.
The removeable front pocket is a pointless gimick. If not used it leaves a lot of useless straps behind.

Overall:
Really not convinced I made the right choice with this pack. I tried to research it as much as possible but could not find any shops in the London area that had one in stock to look over. I therefore bought it from the internet on the back of unbiased reviews. It unfortunately fell short of expectations. I also ended up with the Mark II (like the one in the picture above), not the most recent 2008 version.
On a happier note I e-mailed Berghaus a number of times regarding technical questions I had. They replied on each occasion within minutes and could not have been more helpful.

'SERIOUSLY COMFORTABLE WEIGHT CARRIER'

Strengths:
Very handily Waterproof, lots of little nooks inside the bag for hiding the all important Kendal mint cake or Leatherman, extremely comfortable not to mention flexible.

Weaknesses:
Chest strap popped out a couple of times, but this was just a matter of 2 seconds to slide it back into place, a tad heavy as well.

Overall:
The Bioflex technology definitely seems to fulfill it's objectives and certainly more than makes up for the increased weight of the bag, extrememly versatile. Definitely made me appreciate the pack after first hearing of and then seeing what some of the less flexible bags had done to my fellow trekker's hips over a few days.

'SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT'

Strengths:
The pack is comfortable. Can make carrying a weeks supplies (25kgs), a relatively good experience

Weaknesses:
This pack is NOT waterproof. I have just spent 10 days in the Swedish mountains, and out of the 10 days it rained twice, and the pack leaked on both occasions. On closer inspection it looked like the rain had soddened the material of the pack which then proceeded to leak into the lower compartment wetting my sleeping bag. This pack also squeaks a lot due to the amount of plastic used in its construction (much plastic against plastic) with vaseline this can be fixed

Overall:
BUY A RAIN COVER!!!
and a tub off vaseline.

'Genius: Creamy-smooth ride, extremely well thought out pack.'

Strengths:
Waterproof, breathable back foam, Fantastic BioFlex back system. Very well thought out in terms of pockets, hydration etc.

Weaknesses:
Could be prone to break? Once this pack has been around for a while we will see.

Slight squeak from the Delrin rod but a touch of vaseline stops that instantly.

No easy walking-pole attatchment points although certainly possible.

Heavy: 3kg

Overall:
Unrivalled cushioning in the thick padding around hips, back and shoulders.

Waterproof construction (Berghaus say "more waterproof" to cover themselves as water could get in through hydration pipe exit if submerged), but for all intents and purposes the pack is waterproof.

The split "finger grip" waist belt provides a perfect grip and fit around the waist with absolute comfort.

The occopital cavity for the head is a bit high for my head (I'm 5'10").

I was genuinely suprised at how fluid the back system was and how it really does work. The BioFlex truly is superb, giving perfect load balance and hip transfer 100% of the time. Walking with about 15/17kg I have no trouble. The weight penalty seems to be a small price to pay as it carries itself!

Price: 180. makes it far from the cheapest pack on the market but in my mind worth it entirely. 130. for the C2 series which I also tried for a week is a bargain although this pack only has DryFusion seams in the hood. The C1 seems like a very competetive rival to the likes of the lower end Karrimor and Lowe rucksacs.

'GREAT COMFORT AND SIZE'

Strengths:
The pack is superbly comfortable. Over continuous three week use it remained comfortable around the shoulders and hips. The size is just right for a long distance walk. The fitting is great and very adjustable.

Weaknesses:
It is not waterproof!! After 3 days solid rain on pennine way the pack did leak somewhat. My biggest gripe however is that after only 4 days, on mine and my mates pack, the hip belt buckle no longer stays secure, and pops out at the top when tightened. This does not detract significantly from the pack but is not something I would expect from a £180 bergen.

Overall:
I would recommend this pack without question. It offers great comfort, sits superbly and its the right size for a long distance walk. But I would recommend that anyone buying the pack asks the retailer to change the flimsy 'click in' hip buckle to the more solid 'pull through' one.

'FANTASTIC PIECE OF KIT!'

Strengths:
Impressively watertight (even after losing it in a snow-drift outside the bivvy overnight), back-system works like a dream as you'd expect for the money. switchable front pocket great for drying kit on exped's in summer and handy for your fodder in more snowy climes.

Weaknesses:
Nothing major; the waist strap benefits from switching to Berghaus's omni-buckle, but ohter than that, a solid piece of kit.

Overall:
Brilliant, if a little pricey, but the quality and the fact that barring a couple of dry-bags (for peace of mind rather than practicality) it has proven itself both comfy and water-tight over long distances trekking through Scotland and the Lakes in winter weather.

What more could you ask for?
