'GREAT BASELAYER'
Strengths:
Can be used all year round. Warm in winter, cool in summer.
Deals with moisture extremely well.
Dries out very quickly.
Weaknesses:
None, as far as I can see.
Overall:
I use mine for hill walking all year round. During the warmer months it is often worn by itself, and in winter as part of a layering system. Only when the temperature drops below freezing do I feel the need to switch to the Helly Hansen "warm" version.

'A GREAT BIT OF KIT.'
Strengths:
Close fitting, warm in winter, cool in summer. Dries quickly after washing and when soaked in a lardy bloke's sweat. Comfortable but hardwearing. I've had mine since 1989 - only the labels faded.
Weaknesses:
It got lost last November! Sadly missed.
Overall:
Great for sweaty hill runs, cold search and rescue exercises. 'Nuff said.

'FAB PIECE OF KIT, WOULDN'T HIKE WITHOUT IT'
Strengths:
So warm in winter, even on own. Beautifully cool in Summer. Comfy, looks fab, close fitting, lightweight, does everything a good baselayer should.
Weaknesses:
After a year of intensive use as a single layer, mine has gone a tad bitty where my rucksack lies. Waaay overpriced.
Overall:
If your activity makes you sweat then buy one!(women's-wrong item, pretty much the same though)

'A CLASSIC'
Strengths:
Hardwearing, quick wicking, if not bought in the UK - cheap (regularly available for €40 for a set of top and bottoms here in Finland).
Weaknesses:
Like all synthetics, they get smelly quickly and get really smelly after multi day use.
Overall:
I bought my first lifa top in 1992 and still use for runs and bike rides - it still works fine. My more recent ones are a softer knit and more cosy but still work just as well. Beware that the fit can change radically between seasons. A medium that I bought about three years ago is the perfect fit. Another medium I bought this year is tight on my chest and slightly long on the arms. Something to consider if buying via the internet.
