| 'High spec Waterproof, breathable trousers with thinsulate pa' | | Strengths: Dirt cheap, waterproof and windproof, 100% polyester - Outer has a peachy feel, Teflon coated. Inner has a satin texture, is fast wicking, and is quilted onto the Thinsulate padding. Six pockets (two zippered handwarmer, 2 velcro-close rear pockets, and two 'cargo' leg pockets with velcro), all of which have storm flaps. Waistband has elasticated side panels and wide belt loops. The leg bottoms have zip-off gaiters - a kind of snowskirt with a 'gripper hem' which forms a seal against the boot. YKK zips throughout. | | Weaknesses: No 'give' at all at the knee, so when scrambling or having to raise the knee more than 45% from the body, you have to keep pulling the trouser legs up a little to aid movement. Sizing - I bought size M - 32"-34" waist. I've a 34" waist and the trousers are very loose - would fall down without a belt, but the leg length is right for me (31").
| | Overall: I bought them in Oct '04, described as "Outdoor Winter trousers". This year they are advertised as Thermal outdoor trousers and are only £8.99. As they are not available until 27th October I cannot tell if any of the features have changed. Very comfortable, loose fit, which helps prevent getting too hot in them. I wore them several times in fairly deep snow on Kinder Scout last winter and didn't get cold (or hot), and no snow got up the leg. Ive also crossed fast running streams and the gaiters also kept water out (but I wouldn't like to try standing in water above boot level - they can't be that good). I've only used them a couple of times in heavy rain, and didn't get damp. The Teflon DWR does its job (and is easy to sponge mud off), but the outer seems to be bonded to a membrane (visible in the back pockets) and makes them fully waterproof (dunno if seams are taped). They wick very well but the sweat must build up in the thinsulate padding, so I wash them in soap after every couple of outings and they dry as quickly as any unlined trousers if hung inside-out. Even with the Cranesports label, I'd have expected a much higher price. |
