| 'GREAT FOR CARBO LOADING, ENDURANCE SESSIONS & RECOVERY.' | | Strengths: Well balanced complex carbs with vitamins & minerals (electrolytes) to aid uptake & energy release. Easily digested. Quite palatable (also available in tropical and neutral but this is the nicest i.m.o) | | Weaknesses: NOT an isotonic drink, so strictly speaking non optimal for rehydration purposes. During competitive endurance event it is probably better to use an isotonic with gels (or honey) for extra energy. | | Overall: I used High5 for many years of competitive rowing and used to take it with me on long days of climbing for use between routes to keep the energy levels up. It's a great product for pre-exercise carbo loading and post-exercise energy replacement, and if you're training at low intensity for many hours. But if you are looking for something purely for endurance competition hydration, try an isotonic.
Since stopping competition, I have preferred to go for DIY alternatives as it can pretty costly (price given is for 1.4kg) , especially when you consider that it is mostly corn-starch (I was on a 2 x 2.8kg tub-a-month habit!). I have tried many other sports drinks of similar composition and find H5 & Maxim to be the most reliable. Many brands add cafeine to their drinks which can boost performance but isn't really what I am looking for in a sports drink - H5 doesn't have any so it's a good choice. As with all sports nutrition it is best to test it out before using it in competition. You can send away for free samples via the website above and see if it suits your stomach & tastebuds! |
