More about Alpkit
Average Rating: 4 out of 5
No. of Reviews: 8
RRP: £17.50
Year: 2006

Description: Gourdon is a strange little beast. First he was a roll-top dry bag with a couple of carry straps, then he became a favourite on the beach keeping all the sand out of our sandwiches. He even managed to fake it as an ultra-light race pack. What we found was that Gourdon, unlike most men, was actually quite good at doing a few things at the same time. Available in 25l and 30l sizes (£2.50 extra).

'GREAT LITTLE SAC'
Strengths:
light and simple
Weaknesses:
When delivered had the common problem of slipping straps, Alpkit replaced them with something chunkier, no problem.
Bit of clouding on the window, but who cares, and on wet days you seeem to get a bit of condensation, but that may be getting in and out stuff
Overall:
Ideal little day sac, for those of us who like simple no frills sacs. Seems to keep things dry after 12 months use.
Partner dooesnt use hers as she is into drink tube thingies and hasnt worked out how to carry one in it and get the tube out. I dont use em and cant be bothered to sort a solution for her, she likes her Berghaus Bullfrog more anyway!

'K.I.S.S THE BAG'
Strengths:
Simple, lightweight straightforward design
Waterproof (for a while)
Can be stripped down for lightweight performance.
Able to see where everything is
Weaknesses:
The seams don't stay waterproof for long! Keep them sealed...
Overall:
Great idea from practical people. Just make sure you keep the seams sealed - or you'll get soggy clothes.

'GREAT GEAR BAG'
Strengths:
Waterproof, good build quality of bag, GREAT price
Weaknesses:
Buckles not up too much and slide too much
Overall:
Great bag at an ever better price, very similar to Mammut Alpine Guide Pack, same roll top waterproof closure (Mammut is more rugged though). Dragged mine full of climbing gear around the Alps without issue.

'PRETTY GOOD'
Strengths:
Simple, colourful (perhaps a bit too much, I chose orange), waterproof, tough, light.
Weaknesses:
The straps -I got a bit tired of re-tightening them. Could do with some thing to attach a walking pole to?
Overall:
A marvellously simple and effective idea! I used mine first on a wet and windly (horizontal rain) day in the Beacons. The inside of the bag was the only thing not wet at the end of the day.

'A GREAT IDEA'
Strengths:
Price, weight, waterproof
Weaknesses:
LOOSE STRAPS!!!
Overall:
When I first saw this on Alpkit's website, I thought 'what a great idea',& bought one immediately. After three months use, I still think it's a great idea; it does exactly what it says on the tin; in Alpkit's own words, it 'keeps your stuffs dry'. (What??) It's main failing, however is in those straps - a day's walking is punctuated by a constant re-tightening of all three straps. Other minor niggles are the chest strap- the buckle fell off this on my second day out- it was pretty useless, anyway, even more so minus a buckle, so I binned the whole thing. Also, the clear panel - I don't see the point & I'd rather not advertise to people how ineptly I've packed my sack!
Perversely though, like the other reviewers, I still really like the thing - I'd love to see one, say about 50 litres, capable of carrying a moderate backpacking load. However, Alpkit really do need to look at the straps again.

'VERY USEFUL'
Strengths:
Light, fully waterproof. multi purpose.
Weaknesses:
The straps come loose! Foam thing is hard to get back in the sleeve.
Overall:
It's great, one of the most useful things I've bought. Keeps you stuff dry and can be used as just a drybag if you like. Alpkit need to look at the straps issue but this is still a great value bit of kit!

' roll-top waterproof dry bag'
Strengths:
Light as a feather
Water proof
Ingenious vision panel
Comfotable
Hard wearing
Cheap!!!
Weaknesses:
The straps and buckles constantly need tightening.
Overall:
As you've probably guessed I love this bag. I had originally wanted something light that could pack into nothing so I could take it on climbing and walking holidays. It had to cope with trips around busy shops, days out treking and carrying stuff up climbing routes. This ticked all the boxes. When the bags empty, there's virtually nothing to pack away, it carries a load of stuff with no unecessary extra zippers and cords to get caught or add weight. This also fits perfectly on your back.

My one gripe is the buckles seem a little chunky for the straps causing them to slip when not all in use. One word of caution when packing, make sure you put something sensible in front of the vision panel. Mobile phones, MP3 players and cameras always seemed to end their with a map of the area or a guide book, just to make you look like a propper tourist/victim.
