Patagonia Mixmaster Jacket
More about Patagonia
Average Rating: 5 out of 5
No. of Reviews: 1
RRP: £275
Year: 2007

Description: The Mixmaster uses a stretch woven nylon shell that's durable, windproof and highly water-resistant, yet lightweight, breathable and soft. It's bonded to fuzzy regulator fleece throughout. The Mixmaster is designed to keep you warm even in subzero conditions. The jacket has chest inside pockets, an elastisized waist that pulls unzipped handwarmer pockets open for venting, and perforated Velcro on the sleeves and neck for supple closure. It's cut long in the back and comes with a diaper strap to keep the jacket down and the snow out.

'OLDER VERSION BETTER THAN REDESIGNED VERSION'
Strengths:
Stretches as you move, feels like a second skin. No unnecessary extra fabric. Old version had a comforting fleece lining that meant you rarely needed more than a t-shirt underneath.
Weaknesses:
Impossible now to find the old version. Newer version doesn't have the fleece and instead plumps for "Hydrofil nylon", which works as a wicking material.
Overall:
I love this jacket. I've used it as a daily jacket in Scotland, and I've used it when walking back-country and normal hillwalking. I know it's not the most glamorous use of the kit, but it's used nearly every day, except for the few hot and sunny days in the summer. Scottish weather can get very nasty, but most of the time it doesn't require the hard-shell or fully waterproof jacket. The windproof design is no joke. I've stood on hillforts in piercing winter high winds with students that were tipping over, and the wind never cut through me. As a bonus, I was warm because of the fleece lining, which I was disappointed to see was replaced with a nylon fabric instead. Not as comfy, and I suspect not as warm. Anyway, in my older version of the jacket, I have never gotten overheated. It's only if it's chucking down hard that I end up getting moist - but for the price, and the simplicity, 98% waterproof will do very nicely. I've given it 5 out of 5 for value even though it's notoriously ruinously expensive - but if you consider that it is an all-round, nearly all-weather perfect jacket, it cuts down the need for extra jackets unless you're trekking somewhere that requires hardshell and insulated gear. That bumps up the value somewhat, and in my experience, it works as daily wear in the city, further saving on the costs of a city winter jacket.
