'The Arnold Schwarzenegger of torches'
Strengths:
Powerful Nuremberg rally-style beam, more than adequate for night climbing. Fits comfortably and securely with or without helmet. Weather proof.
Weaknesses:
On the heavy side. Expensive, heavy, not very long-lasting and sometimes hard-to-find battery. Loose swivel on-off mechanism means it can unnervingly turn itself on in your pack.
Overall:
If you need a reliable torch which produces a strong beam in all conditions, this is a good one to pick. If your needs are more modest, there are lighter and easier to use torches around. Rating based on use for climbing.

'Don't leave home without one!'
Strengths:
Bright, easy to use with gloves on, total hands free illumination. Almost indistructable
Weaknesses:
wife hates it becouse she thinks they look stupid - maybe so but I can put the tent up in the dark a darn sight quicker than she can! Large duracell batterys can be hard to obtain and ever deady blues aren't worth the trouble installing!
Overall:
I have a mark 2 type with the old style battery case (which I prefer to the new ones) and it is still going strong (it's only had a replacement strap and bulbs!) need I say more!!!

'the one the others have to beat'
Strengths:
comfortable, great adjustable beam
good battery life, if you don't use halogen bulbs
Weaknesses:
none you can't overcome. yes they turn themselves on, remove a battery or bulb before you pack it. yes the large single batteries are scarce, buy a converter and use 3xAA batteries
Overall:
I have two that I've had years and can't see any reason to replace them with anything else

'Mega version gives all night use'
Strengths:
The Mega version uses 3 'C' cells. This gives around three times longer battery life
Weaknesses:
Extra weight, but you don't notice it
Overall:
The Zoom's a fine thing but I hate the idea of the battery running out as they don't last too long. 'Always carry a spare,' I hear you cry; but a version that will last all night on one set of batteries is so much more reliable. It's around a tenner more than the Zoom, but the added bonus of using commonly available C cells more than makes up for it.

'INDUSTRY STANDARD, BUT GETTING DATED'
Strengths:
Tough, reliable, reasonable light output, halogen option, lots of different-coloured webing straps so you don't get confused with your mate's. Focussable, adjustable beam.
Weaknesses:
Relatively heavy, short battery life, halogen bulbs pricey, square battery a pain to locate in the UK and almost impossible elsewhere, in extreme cold, battery output suffers.
Overall:
The bog standard issue for climbers and hill walkers since the year blog, the Zoom is starting to feel it's age compared to the latest LED wonder gizmos. Battery life is relatively limited compared to LEDs, particularly if you use the halogen bulb option, but in its favour it's reliable and robust and shrugs off abuse.

The rare square battery can be hard to find and pricey as well and in extreme conditions, the housing on the rear of the head strap means it gets cold and power output drops noticeably, so for cold climbs, the Arctic version with remote battery is better. The 3AA adaptor sidesteps some of the problems, but battery life is even shorter.

The beam is generally good and up to night time climbing, particularly if you fit a battery-eating halogen bulb and the zoom option lets you choose between a focussed beam and a wider pool of light, though as the lens ages, it scratches and the beam becomes less effective.

It's still a good buy for all round use, but for close-up stuff LEDs like the Tikka and the BD Moonlight cost about the same, but have much longer battery life as well as being much lighter and using easier-to-find battery sizes.

'SOLID KIT BUT STARTING TO LOOK OUTDATED'
Strengths:
Fantastic beam - especially using halogen
Sturdy - mine is 16 years old and still going strong
Weaknesses:
Those damn square batteries - convert it to take AAs like I did
Halogen really eats the juice
Bit pricey now - I only paid £15 for mine.
Overall:
This has been a brilliant servant. I have found it especially useful for doing night nav with my school's Gold DofE. I wouldn't buy new but if you are after one then there are some second hand bargains to be had. It doesn't have the staying power of some current LED models but then who want to be using one on the hill for more than two hours?

'OVERRATED'
Strengths:
One of the first products on the market.
Weaknesses:
1. Tendency to get switched on too easily in a rucksack
2. Batteries are hard to obtain
3. The metal plate behind the bulb corrodes if it gets wet and is not easily replaced
4. Spare bulbs are not very secure
Overall:
Look elsewhere, there are better products on the market now. This is OK for casual use, but I wouldn't want to depend on one.

'OF IT'S TIME'
Strengths:
relatively bombproof and got me off the hill more than once. A far better light than the lightweight alternatives....but
Weaknesses:
a heavyweight in all senses...and then there's the battery which is very twentieth century (heavier than a tikka by itself and such a short lifespan)
Overall:
...sadly I prefer the lightweight tikka these days - although the old zoom is still hauled out for the kids to read by on those family camping trips
