Scarpa Manta
More about Scarpa
Average Rating: 2 out of 5
No. of Reviews: 8
RRP: £160
Year: 2004

Description: Despite its ruggedness, the Manta is very lightweight owing to the use of the 'PU Ultralite' M4 tech sole unit which also offers superb cushioning. The mid-sole is the superb Pro-Flex unit which is stiff enough to provide a high level of support, but still has a little flexibility for walking comfort. The Manta is crampon compatible, and we would recommend the Grivel G10 or G12 with either the New-Classic, or the New-Matic binding system. Weight:--- 1.96 kg (Size 42) Colour:--- Blue

'GREAT B2 BOOT BUT A LITTLE DATED'
Strengths:
*Bombproof
*Has never leaked
*Fairly stiff
*Comfortable for long days
Weaknesses:
*Took a while to break in
*Heavy
Overall:
These were my first winter boots, and bought almost entirely on the strength of their past reviews, and the fact that they fitted. I've used them for two winters walking, and a handful of easy winter climbs and have been very pleased. They still look like new and have years of use left. The grip from the sole is excellent and the uppers are bombproof.
The only downsides I've seen is that they are so stiff that the initial break-in was lengthy, and they are a bit heavy.
My more modern boots are certainly lighter, but maybe not as durable as these. These boots will probably outlast all my others!!

'THERE IS BETTER OUT THERE'
Strengths:
Brand name
Weaknesses:
Not waterproof, heavy and heavier when wet. Lacing system slacks no matter how you tie that knot
Overall:
Have completed two winter mountain seasons in Scotland with little wear and tear on boot they will not get third visit.

'NOT FOR ME.'
Strengths:
Good solid construction
Weaknesses:
Personally, i found the boot too hard for distances. I have had many boots, none have given me troubles with my Knees but these. persisted and ended up with ITB problems and physio advised ditching them.

they are also quite heavy when they eventually do take up water.
Overall:
I know people who have got on with them and love them but they beat me.

'A BOOT THAT JUST KEEPS ON COSTING - WHY CHANGE IT!!!'
Strengths:
They come with a gret reputation and I have worn out four previous pairs since 15 years old.
Weaknesses:
Apart from this pair - why oh why stiffen to the M4 sole unit. My podiatrist (who I didn't need before these boots gave be Achilles Tendonosis) says that he has been recommeding Manta's for years, but when he saw the new M4 sole unit he dispaired - he considers it far too stiff for walking-in in.
I have abandoned using them in favour of my Delta's which, when fitted with the £350 specialist orthotics made to correct the damage the Manta's have done, are flexible enough to cope with a walk in but still rigid enough to manage a climb!!
Overall:
Why oh why have they changed them to make them stiffer - they were great as they were, I wore out two pairs when they were called Trionic Manta's and came in Elephant Foot Grey, saw off a further two pairs of brown ones with the front binding ridge - but alas the Blue Ones have ruined my feet - a condition that my never fully recover. IF THEY WERE GOING TO CHANGE IT THIS MUCH WHY NOT CHANGE THE NAME!!

'HATE THE THINGS'
Strengths:
Few that I could see
Weaknesses:
Heels,heels,heels.
Overall:
I've just given a pair of these away! Simply couldn't break them in. Got a pair of Scarpa Trango instead. Suoperbly comfortable. Guy in the shop said that either I'd break the Manta or they'd break me. They won. Apparently in the trade they have a reputation for being difficult to get on with. Can't see me buying Scarpa boots ever again.

'A CLASSIC WINTER BOOT'
Strengths:
These boots are the corner stone of winter boots. The classic design is added to by the inclusion of a Goretex liner(for the UK market). This makes them excellant for a wet Scottish winter. The stiff Vibram sole makes kicking in steps no issue in snow and wet turf.
Weaknesses:
They have added a goretex liner but no real quality name for the heat insulation. This led to some chilled feet during a very cold winter night walk. Breaking them in does require a certain amount of work (blisters on the heels) but in my experience this has been no more than any other quality winter boot. (If someone invents a boot that fits all feet first time: then buy em!)
Overall:
These boots do not deviate from Scarpa's high quality reputation. If you have a foot for Scarpa then these are a very good mid range winter boot. Take the time for a correct fitting & break them in before any exped or extended period of wear and you'll suffer no more.

'THE JURY'S STILL OUT........'
Strengths:
Solid construction, waterproof (gore-tex lined) good grippy sole, good with crampons - good pedigree, so far never had a bad pair of Scarpas in 20 years.
Weaknesses:
Initially unforgiving and blister-inducing - hoping they break-in better(!)and not the best for long walk-ins
Overall:
Bought to replace my old Scarpa Alps (RIP god bless 'em), these new boots hurt my feet and cause heel blisters. Am hoping 2nd winter season will see them settle down as they get a wee bit more battered about - otherwise maybe free to good home come April...?
