'GREAT'
Strengths:
You can pack gear in them, easy to clean, cheap to buy, you DO NOT get mental problems from using Aluminium pans
Weaknesses:
None with genuine army pans, cheap civvie models are thinner and can warp over a high heat
Overall:
Great value for money kit

'Cheap, do the job'
Strengths:
They are 100% multi functional; they can be used to cook in, to eat in, to drink from, to bail water etc... They can also be used as a weapon, and if gets dented, just bash it from the other side to un-dent the dent! They are also really cheap and light. To boil water, just put water in the small one, and place the other one inverted onto the small one.
Weaknesses:
The handle can be a bit fiddly, but otherwise no problems
Overall:
Very worth it piece of kit, since they are extremely light and cheap and multi purpose and durable.

'CRAP!'
Strengths:
cheap!
Weaknesses:
rectangular? Why? Corners are difficult to clean - huge handles add weight..

From earlier review... To boil water, just put water in the small one, and place the other one inverted onto the small one. ...

Do this and risk poisoning from the products of combustion as they are slowly but surely aimed directly at your water... Nice If you must use them boil water in the small mess tin and put the other the 'right' way up on top - acts as a lid without funneling the fumes into your brew!
Overall:
Don't be a wannabe Bill Oddie muppet and buy a decent (round) pan for a couple of quid more!

'"CHEAP TINS"'
Strengths:
the price, they make a not bad kettle as well. The shape of them is good for keeping yor pack compact without wasting space.
Weaknesses:
having corners makes them difficulat to clean and i found that with my stove because of the intense heat they buckled easily(I use an MSR whisperlite 600).
Overall:
not bad all round but they are good for filling with cutlery and other bits and bobs to save space. I would spend a bit more cash next time.

'NO, THEY WON'T FIT INTO A NUTSHELL'
Strengths:
They are a great size for taking a small gas cannister and stove
Weaknesses:
If you scratch the aluminium into your dindins, you'll develop mental problems
Overall:
why pay more? If the weight concerns you, just take one!

'WHY?'
Strengths:
Solidly built.
Weaknesses:
Makes you look like a wanabe squaddie.
Overall:
I left the Marines mid-eighties so I cannot comment on the new kit. The stuff I carried, from mess tins to sleeping bags, were bullet proof but heavy and some dodget designs. Just look at the 58' pattern fighting order and large pack.
Get a bank loan and buy some proper modern lightweight stuff

'BOXY BITS OF METAL WITH HANDLES ON'
Strengths:
-durable
-lighter than some more complex cooksets
-pack easily
-cheap
-multi use
Weaknesses:
-heavy to some
-square shape may be difficult to clean(if youre being wingy about it ;) )
Overall:
great piece of kit for the money. You usually get what you pay for, but here you get a plate, pan, kettle, and a shovel for six quid. they can also be excellent if you can find some of the old steel ones, slighly heavier but dont deform with extreme heat, and can be placed directly on embers for cooking.

'NO FRILLS'
Strengths:
British army mess tins are durable and cheap, so if they get a bit bashed, who cares? Fashion a lid out of tinfoil and your water will boil a lot faster, saving gas and money.
Weaknesses:
Can be difficult to clean. I used to carry mine in a waterproof bag, with a small scouring pad and as soon as I was finished a quick scour and they were as good as new.
Overall:
A good, cheap bit of kit. Especially handy if you are into boil in the bag, as the pouches don't fit into smaller pots. If you have a pair always use the large one for cooking and the small one for washing and shaving. That reduces the chance of you getting soapy dinners.
