'SIMPLY WARM'
Strengths:
Light, well-considered design, comfortably soft materials, very warm for its weight.
Weaknesses:
Elasticated cuffs may not be tight enough for some. Light materials mean you need to take care not to abuse it.
Overall:
A simple, straightforward design with two zipped pockets, detachable hood and drawstring adjustment at waist and hem. The Coal has no unnecessary seams and panels, going instead for a functional design aimed at the most warmth for the least weight. Worked a treat in Lapland last winter, but also perfect for walking to work in the UK. GoLite gear is a bit pricey, though, so unless you are really watching the ounces you might want to consider a different brand and save on the pounds.

'LIGHTWEIGHT BACKUP '
Strengths:
Extremely light, 75% of the weight of my usual fleecequick to dry,Really warm.
Weaknesses:
Styling a bit basic, but who cares.
Overall:
Have always relied on fleeces and various base layers in the past. But was caught out on the Camino de Santiago in Oct 2004 in the mts. In November last year in much much colder conditions I was snug. I was able to cut weight in the backpack and ended up way warmer. I was also surprised how quickly it dried off when I washed it. It will be a standard part of any daypack in future.
