'Did it work....nope'
Strengths:
erm...none that I can think of
Weaknesses:
It didn't actually work for me
Overall:
Tested in the Amazon. I soaked my mossie net in Permethrin to kill anything that landed on it but it quickly showed that it was not effective. I woke up a few mornings with fresh mozzie bites on my ankles, one of which came with the added bonus of Malaria.

Not impressed at all with this product.

'AN EFFECTIVE FABRIC TREATMENT'
Strengths:
Can actually kill insects as well as repelling them. Unlike many repellants, effective against ticks. Doesn't appear to degrade fabrics. Very long-lasting, even through washes.
Weaknesses:
Can only be applied to fabrics; breaks down immediately on skin. Only partially effective against mosquitoes. Environmentally unfriendly, being harmful to many animals.
Overall:
On its own, this is not as effective as Deet. However it has several advantages for treating fabric, being longer-lasting and not dissolving synthetics. It also repels ticks more effectively than Deet. I was the only person in my group with permethrin-treated clothing on a recent trip, and the only one who didn't get a single tick, despite being an insect magnet. The ideal use for this is as a supplement to Deet, to treat your clothing and mosquito net before travel.
