 | | | Posted: 29/06/01 | | 'The most efficient GPS on the market' | | Strengths: Highest efficiency of any battery operated GPS on the market (22 hours on 2 AA batteries), simple, rugged, hard to accidentally turn on key buttons and run down batteries, small, lightweight, can be used one-handed | | Weaknesses: Only one hiking route due to limited memory; no external antenna option | | Overall: For hiking and backpacking in remote terrain this is probably the best GPS receiver on the market. Lightweight and very small, it has incredible battery efficiency, requiring minimal support to keep it going. It thankfully has none of the power-wasting accessories thought necessary by vehicle-bound GPS users, such as inaccurate electronic compasses and hard-to-see software maps lacking important detail. The eTrex has the highese waterproof rating currently available in a handheld (IPX7), something that Magellan or eMap can't offer you. At a U.S. price of about $105 currently it's a genuine bargain.

 | | | Posted: 15/11/01 | | 'NICE, DEPENDABLE AND CHEAP' | | Strengths: Easy to use, waterproof, fits many mobile phone cases, good battery life, reasonably quick to acquire satellites. | | Weaknesses: Route feature does not seem to allow you to skip a point, I found it better to "GoTo" each waypoint as I needed them rather than use a route. | | Overall: I like it, a few of the features could be smoother but that is probably a matter of individual preference. The Etrex doesn't have a built-in compass which is good as you are not tempted to rely on the GPS alone. There are two manuals, a bit of folded cardstock which shows you how to use the basic functions (ideal to take with you the first time) and a more detailed booklet. Both are clearly written and more importantly they are specific to this model and not covering a range of models with differing features (I hate it when that happens). I did find the unit quick enough to leave in the sack switched off and flick it on to confirm position from time to time, although I was trying this on Kinder which is less than 50 miles from home, I surmise that it can take longer to acquire if you have moved hundreds of miles since last taking a position. Overall a very nice bit of kit for gadget freaks like me! |
