'CHEAP CHEERFUL AND WORKS'
Strengths:
Cheap and easy to use, reasonably rugged, runs on AA batteries, long battery life, reliable, buy a cable and upload/download the waypoints. Garmin's support service is second to none.
Weaknesses:
Buttons can be difficult to operate
Overall:
Simple to operate. Mine is the camo version and cost about £60. Shop around for a good deal. Don't drop the Camo in the green stuff though, its not easy to find. Learn how to use one properly before going out. I caught myself out having set it to the wrong datum. I was on the wong side of a hill 300 metres from where I should have been!

'SIMPLE, CHEAP AND RELIABLE'
Strengths:
Does have much functionality so battery life is good. I bought mine about 6 years ago and it's still on the same set of batteries!
Waterproof, easy to see and you can use with one hand.
Weaknesses:
Maybe basic for some. For me all I wanted was to know definitely where I was as a backup to map and compass so all of the extra bumpf you can get was a waste of money
Overall:
Brilliant bit of kit. Relativley cheap piece of kit that could save your life or at least stop you really cocking up and getting pretty miserable.

I only ever use it as a backup to map and compass and it rarely comes out. When it does it generally just proves that I knew where I was in the first place! The odd occasion I've been wrong and its saved a bit of hardship, especially at the end of a long hard day.

This with a mobile is an essential piece of kit to take out, especially if you are on your owm.

'superb piece of kit'
Strengths:
easy to use and easily read screen
PRICE:
lots of places selling as special offer. I got mine for £99.!
Weaknesses:
a bit of a pain having to scroll through drop down menus to enter coordinates but no real gripes
Overall:
DO NOT use any gps unless in conjunction with a map compass, altimeter if you've got one.
But this little thing is magic for finding trig points on cloudy flat scottish plateaus. 6m accuracy should be good enough for anybody.

'The most efficient GPS on the market'
Strengths:
Highest efficiency of any battery operated GPS on the market (22 hours on 2 AA batteries), simple, rugged, hard to accidentally turn on key buttons and run down batteries, small, lightweight, can be used one-handed
Weaknesses:
Only one hiking route due to limited memory; no external antenna option
Overall:
For hiking and backpacking in remote terrain this is probably the best GPS receiver on the market. Lightweight and very small, it has incredible battery efficiency, requiring minimal support to keep it going. It thankfully has none of the power-wasting accessories thought necessary by vehicle-bound GPS users, such as inaccurate electronic compasses and hard-to-see software maps lacking important detail. The eTrex has the highese waterproof rating currently available in a handheld (IPX7), something that Magellan or eMap can't offer you. At a U.S. price of about $105 currently it's a genuine bargain.

'WORKS FOR ME'
Strengths:
If you set a waymark when you start, it can later tell you how long it will take to get back to the car with your current speed and direction.
Weaknesses:
The battery meter is a bit iffy. When the battery is midway down getting a satelite reading is neigh impossible but keeps telling you that it's trying. Always carry spare batteries if you're going to depend on a GPS.
Overall:
This thing does what it's supposed to.

If you keep it on it will map your route. If you don't have a map, you can let it map your route and then when you turn back, you just follow in your own digital footprints.

You can give it coordinates and it will show you a big arrow in the right direction and the distance. Dead handy for Geocaching.

I've also used an eMap. The UK maps don't have nearly enough detail for walking but they sure suck batteries. The reception also wasn't anywhere near as good as the eTrex.

'NICE, DEPENDABLE AND CHEAP'
Strengths:
Easy to use, waterproof, fits many mobile phone cases, good battery life, reasonably quick to acquire satellites.
Weaknesses:
Route feature does not seem to allow you to skip a point, I found it better to "GoTo" each waypoint as I needed them rather than use a route.
Overall:
I like it, a few of the features could be smoother but that is probably a matter of individual preference. The Etrex doesn't have a built-in compass which is good as you are not tempted to rely on the GPS alone. There are two manuals, a bit of folded cardstock which shows you how to use the basic functions (ideal to take with you the first time) and a more detailed booklet. Both are clearly written and more importantly they are specific to this model and not covering a range of models with differing features (I hate it when that happens). I did find the unit quick enough to leave in the sack switched off and flick it on to confirm position from time to time, although I was trying this on Kinder which is less than 50 miles from home, I surmise that it can take longer to acquire if you have moved hundreds of miles since last taking a position. Overall a very nice bit of kit for gadget freaks like me!

'HANDY,ACCURATE,EASY TO USE,CHEAP TO BUY AND RUN.'
Strengths:
I used mine to locate a plant on the edge of Bleaklow/Langsett Moors from a 10 figure ref. I was within touching distance - no cheating as the plant isn`t readily visible.
Weaknesses:
Hard to read the display.
Overall:
I never go without it

'CHEAP, LIGHT, ACCURATE, AND USEFULL !!!'
Strengths:
Small and light-weight (A true pocket GPS reciever)
Waterproof
Fairly good battery life
Weaknesses:
No altimeter or compass (Well, Proper one at least) and the step up to the one that does have them is a big difference in price
Overall:
Great piece of kit, Its so small and light that there really is no excuse for leaving it at home !
