'YOU CAN READ YOUR MAP UNDERWATER IN THIS...'
Strengths:
...well almost. I have a slight tear in the edge of the seal on mine but it has never let in any water despite living in my leg pocket while crawling through puddles, streams, snow, mud and stuff. Nuff said.
It's been properly abused but only has a couple of minor scratches.
Weaknesses:
Size is a bit of an issue, it can be very fiddley to fit a bulky map with improvised map folds in.
String loops are utter poo (not an issue for me as mine lives in a pocket).
Overall:
This thing is an essential buy. While I agree with the other comments about the trapped air being annoying it helps to reassure me everytime I seal it that it's still waterproof. Cheap too as I got mine for a tenner.

'GREAT MAP CASE FOR HOLDING IN YOUR HAND'
Strengths:
waterproof, lasts really well,
Weaknesses:
the lanyard holes rip open too easily
Overall:
wonderfully waterproof and lasts forever with the plastic staying soft and pliable. The lanyard holes are totally crap in comparison with the rest of the case and let it down. This is the biz if you do not need a lanyard but no use if you do. Fix this fault, Ortlieb, please!!!!

'BEST MAP CASE I HAVE OWNED'
Strengths:
properly waterproof, strong material, flexible
Weaknesses:
rubbery material can make putting docs in a difficult procedure
The neck lanyard thing - see other reviews!
Overall:
Top marks for the Ortlieb design boys n' girls. Takes my A4 Memory Map printouts (with a bit of fiddling as above) and keeps them out of harm's way in whatever conditions I happen to find myself - mostly wet ones at present. I had another case (Lifeventure) which cost 1/3 more & leaked on me on the Great Glen Way, making my whole map arrangement a soggy blur. Roll it up and put it in your cargo pocket. Sit on it. Drink from it (just kidding). I have a spare one which I use to keep my camera, mobile phone etc in - wouldn't trust the job to anything else.

'VERY WATERPROOF, BUT NOE GREAT IF YOU KEEP DROPPING IT!'
Strengths:
extremly waterproof, mine has been dropped in steams frequently and not a drop of water has got in
Weaknesses:
the string does not attach properly and keeps coming off!-very annoying-a stupid design! quite expensive also
Overall:
great if you are prepared to carry it without string

'OUTSTANDING'
Strengths:
Totally waterproof, Due to the rubbery material it will not crack and split like so many other cases on the market. Flexible so you can easily fold the case for jacket pockets or pushing into the waistband of your rucksack. You can even use it as a seat when you stop, just remember to take out any breakables.
Weaknesses:
As Alison says a really stupid arrangement for the neck string. I know three people with this case and they have all taken it off. But you will never have it flapping around in the wind in a force 10...
Overall:
I have had the case for around a year and been on some rather inhospitable hillsides over the last year and every map has survived!. So the excess cost of the case is easily recovered when you can go back to buying the standard OS map rather than those Aqua maps. Buy it.

'NO BETTER MAP CASE'
Strengths:
Just perfect design really, has all features you'd expect in a map case: made of waterproof material, has hole in top for map to go in, and something to seal hole with.
Saying that it is very flexible, and hard wearing unlike all other map cases.
Weaknesses:
Velcro sealing strip, bit of a faff, have to remember to squeeze air out of map case before sealing as is so water tight as to be also air tight. Who needs a bit of string on a map case? - surely one garrotting with a spinning case is enough to throw it away permanently and carry it in your pocket.
Overall:
Excellent bit of kit if all your maps are not laminated.

'ITS WATERPROOF ALRIGHT'
Strengths:
Its well designed, flexible and hard wearing, and doesn't leak.
Easily fits in a jacket pocket.
Weaknesses:
Echo both comments above, remember to squeeze the air out before sealing it & the string keeps coming off. The latter's not too much of a problem as rarely wear it round the neck.

Its small size means you've got a limited view when you're folding a map, so do need to get it out often. That said an A4 version is available.
Overall:
Saves on buying the laminated OS maps & able to keep the map handy instead of hidden in the ruck sack when its raining.

Rips where string hook attached

'BUY IT!'
Strengths:
Used one for years and it's outlasted most of the rest of my kit. Very flexible, it spends most of the time under my rucksack belt. Rubbery surface helps when it comes to using a compass. Totally waterproof, it also doubles as a seat.
Weaknesses:
Expel the air before closing the top. Dump the stupid strings!
Overall:
If only all my kit worked so well. It even saves me money, because my maps last so long.
