'YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU HAD....OCCASIONALLY'
Strengths:
Small, light, strong, cheap, occasionally handy.
Weaknesses:
none really. Can be a little hazardous to rack - it can do you a terrible injury if racked too far forward.
Overall:
A weirdo bit of kit. The Bulldog (and similar eg BDs Pitbull) is a niche product for steep ground. Sod ethics and hammer it into a crack when you think you may die. Slot it into an old pick placement for an instant runner when there's nothing else around. But for most of us this occurs about once a decade (hopefully) so if you're the kind of sicko steep ice/mixed climber so beloved of Tami Knight (the cartoonist) who regularly runs out 50m pitches then it's worth it. Otherwise it's really only novelty value. (I bought one just to remind me not to get into the kind of situation where I may have to use it - it now acts as a talisman as if I am carrying it I never need it!). For the hard boys and girls only (or weenies like me with a low fear threshold), for whom it will be really indispensible. Difficult to rate - if you need it, 5/5, the best of the bunch.

'DESPERATE KIT FOR DESPERADOS. '
Strengths:
Small, light, strong, cheapish, and good on frozen turf.
Weaknesses:
Prone to popping out of steep ice and it’s a monster to rack.
Overall:
This bit of kit is great for frozen turf, iced up cracks and to be honest that’s about it. I have used it on steep waterfall ice in France and found it to be marginal to say the least. I agree, forget ethics and hammer the wee beast into anything that will hold, just think of it as a viscous looking peg.
The main weakness is racking it. Its so sharp it cuts into anything, swings around and generally likes getting in the way. Its best used on Scottish mixed routes where you can whack it somewhere and then pray it holds.
Again, I find it difficult to rate but I will go with 4/5.
