 | | | Posted: 08/07/01 | | 'BIG is not always better ' | | Strengths: Lots of gadgets, well-cut screwdriver blades, very sharp blades of good steel | | Weaknesses: So-so construction, loose pivots, very heavy | | Overall: Being a Yank I thought bigger was always better, and worked my way up the Knife/Tool category until I got to the Leatherman. I finally got enough - too much, actually.
The Wave is a comfortable piece but it's bulky and very heavy - 227 grammes. Quality was good and bad. Sharp blades, good screwdriver bits and scissors, but it had some problems with loose pivot pins. They're designed to be adjusted/tightened, but only with a special wrench, which doesn't come with the tool. As a result the various bits could get a little wobbly from time to time.
Bottom line is I've left this in the 4-wheel drive, where its large pliers and files are more useful, and when on foot I've reverted to the Swiss Army knife, a Wenger Survivor or Victorinox WorkChamp. Still awfully big knives, but lighter and more practical for trekking purposes. |

 | | | Posted: 24/02/04 | | 'ONE BIG TOOLBOX' | | Strengths: You have all the tools you would ever dream of, except a corkscrew (as I found out to my expense). The worldwide warranty also gives peace of mind, and since I bought from the dear old US of A, I can say that it was quite cheap. | | Weaknesses: As I said, it lacks a corkscrew (as do all Leathermans come to think of it). It is a bit heavy, mostly due to the thick handles. Also the tool can twist unnervingly while using the screwdrivers. | | Overall: It is one good piece of kit. Before I had a Leatherman Flair, and lost it. And as they say, 'you appreciate what you had when you lose it'. I simply had to get another Leatherman for all the odd jobs around the house, since my dad always has the tools in his car. Bought from the USA it is relatively cheap, so I suggest trying an online shop. The company claims that the Wvae has 'the most comfortable handles', but be warned, this only applies when the tool is used as a pliers. Then the rounded handles are truly comfortable. But when it is closed, it is quite the opposite due to the protruding blade backs. But despite its 'comfortable handles' being not so comfortable after all, and being a bit 'twisty', I still wouldn't go out without it, and it has helped me from cooking sausages to plugging a Land Rover's leaky tank. That in fact is it's strength; it's versatility, since it's just like carrying a toolbox with you. |
