'INDESPENSABLE.'
Strengths:
Like the blade lock feature, the old leatherman without it was lethal.
Weaknesses:
Quite heavy, but that is probably why it is so strong.Expensive, but it will probably be a lifetime purchase.
Overall:
A classic, well developed bit of kit, mine is in the car and goes everywhere with me.

'The best multi-tool on the market?'
Strengths:
Strong, tools all come in useful especially the pliers which you don't get on pen knives. Comes with belt pouch. Blades very sharp!
Weaknesses:
A bit heavy for people who like ultra light gear. When using scew drivers and the tool is "closed", the two handles tend to twist a little unnervingly. Doesn't come with a key ring or lanyard but these can be attached. It's difficult to put the tool in the pouch with lanyard attachment open.
Overall:
I have used this quite a lot and it is definitely an improvement on the smaller pen knives I've had in the past. It doesn't have the grip handles like on the Gerber Legend, but I haven't missed this. £90 is a lot, but this is similar to the other two decent multi-tools on the market (Gerber Legend and Victorinox Swisstool). I expect it to last a long time so it will probably be a sound investment.

'BIG is not always better '
Strengths:
Lots of gadgets, well-cut screwdriver blades, very sharp blades of good steel
Weaknesses:
So-so construction, loose pivots, very heavy
Overall:
Being a Yank I thought bigger was always better, and worked my way up the Knife/Tool category until I got to the Leatherman. I finally got enough - too much, actually.

The Wave is a comfortable piece but it's bulky and very heavy - 227 grammes. Quality was good and bad. Sharp blades, good screwdriver bits and scissors, but it had some problems with loose pivot pins. They're designed to be adjusted/tightened, but only with a special wrench, which doesn't come with the tool. As a result the various bits could get a little wobbly from time to time.

Bottom line is I've left this in the 4-wheel drive, where its large pliers and files are more useful, and when on foot I've reverted to the Swiss Army knife, a Wenger Survivor or Victorinox WorkChamp. Still awfully big knives, but lighter and more practical for trekking purposes.

'Wobly'
Strengths:
Variety of tools, locking blades, warranty
Weaknesses:
wobbly, price
Overall:
The wave is a good tool but is let down by the wobbly feel of its handles when shut. Oh yeah we're getting ripped off u can get one for $73 dollars in the US which is where i bought mine.
The wobbly handles shouldn't be too much of a problem though- its backed by a 25 year warranty.
The rest of the tool is great!!!!!!!!!
(I've given it a high value rateing based on the price i paid in the USA) if it were the UK price it'd be around 2 or 1

'HOT AS MY PANTS'
Strengths:
Does exactly what it says on the tin... has all the tools I need as a climber/IT Engineer and has even foiled a mugging.
Weaknesses:
Not cheap. The leather pouch is a bit YMCA.
Overall:
This is one of those things that everyone wants but few can justify. If you get one you will wonder why you settled for less before.

'BEASTY'
Strengths:
It is big it is heavy it a work horse, it is great for little wanders from a campsite, it is also great for work and car camping! It is the sort of thing you always wish you had!
Weaknesses:
It is big it is heavy-yes i know i copied and padsted it-for climbing backpacking etc. it useless and for this it gets a lower rating, if you are backpacking etc. a small swis army climber would fit the bill much better.
Overall:
big and beasty, not ideal for all situations.

'GOOD BIT OF KIT'
Strengths:
Big enough to use, smaller and lighter is not always better.
Tough, well made.
Two very sharp blades.
Well made
Weaknesses:
Lanyard clip is next to useless.
Leather holder is a little tight, I would have preferred non-leather.
Like many of these tools you always feel your running the risk of losing a nail when getting to some of the more fiddly gadgets...
Overall:
This is the biggest Leatherman, if your looking for small and lite then take a look at the other Leatherman tools.

If you don't mind the extra little bit of weight and want a tough well made multi gadget tool then this is great.

I gave this a high value rating as I picked this up new from ebay for £42.

'OVERPRICED'
Strengths:
Plenty of tools to keep you amused, rounded grip makes it more comfortable to hold.

25 year guarantee gives peace of mind

Good looks
Weaknesses:
The tools seem 'wobbly' - i don't know if this is due to the mechanism or the quality of the metal.

Also, the tool don't 'snap' back into place in the same way you get with any victorinox knife. Only 4 tools can open from the outside (without opening the handles), whereas on a Swiss Tool, all tools open from the outside.

When opening any of the tools, some of the other pices tend to come out of the casing as well.

Only the tools that open from the outside (the blades, saw and file) lock in place, and the locking mechanism is fiddly.
Overall:
An attractive tool with plenty of instruments. However, I feel it is let down by the build quality and some attention to detail is needed to improve the product. I think this is overpriced at 90 squid, and i think that the Swiss Tool by Victorinox is a much better choice. Perhaps the Wave would be more attractive at 50-60 pounds. This seems a more realistic price tag for the quality of the item.

'PRACTICAL BUT LACK QUALITY BUILD'
Strengths:
Usefull multi-purpose tool when trecking and backpacking. Like the sharp blades and pliers.
Weaknesses:
Can be awkward to open up some of the smaller appliances. The build and metal quality below expectations.

Supplement with a solid blade if you need to use serious pressure. Like most locking blade tools the locking part can fail and you risk injury
Overall:
Very functional and practical design but it should be built to a better standard for the price. Still prefer it to my victorinox

Disapointment increased when the locking mechanism failed on the file and skinned my knuckles.

Is the guarentee practical outside of the USA? think not!

'ONE BIG TOOLBOX'
Strengths:
You have all the tools you would ever dream of, except a corkscrew (as I found out to my expense). The worldwide warranty also gives peace of mind, and since I bought from the dear old US of A, I can say that it was quite cheap.
Weaknesses:
As I said, it lacks a corkscrew (as do all Leathermans come to think of it). It is a bit heavy, mostly due to the thick handles. Also the tool can twist unnervingly while using the screwdrivers.
Overall:
It is one good piece of kit. Before I had a Leatherman Flair, and lost it. And as they say, 'you appreciate what you had when you lose it'. I simply had to get another Leatherman for all the odd jobs around the house, since my dad always has the tools in his car. Bought from the USA it is relatively cheap, so I suggest trying an online shop. The company claims that the Wvae has 'the most comfortable handles', but be warned, this only applies when the tool is used as a pliers. Then the rounded handles are truly comfortable. But when it is closed, it is quite the opposite due to the protruding blade backs. But despite its 'comfortable handles' being not so comfortable after all, and being a bit 'twisty', I still wouldn't go out without it, and it has helped me from cooking sausages to plugging a Land Rover's leaky tank. That in fact is it's strength; it's versatility, since it's just like carrying a toolbox with you.
