| 'GOOD VALUE' | | Strengths: Very light, easy to pack into the stuff sack, has kept the rain from getting in during downpours lasting uo to 3 hours while out in the Peak District. I got them for £16 in a sale so I'm reet chuffed.[Update 20/09/07] They are waterproof and remain so but bit easily overwhelmed in a heavy rain storm and this inhibits breathability significantly. As they are advertised as emergency rain pants one can't expect the earth. Durability is better than I expected given the weight of the fabric- no holes or rips so far. I have used them for walking only - doubt whether they'd take serious abuse. I tend to go for the cheaper option with w/p trousers anyway as I find they are more prone to getting damaged than jackets are. | | Weaknesses: Although the fabric is breathable i.e. if you slow down or stop the condensed sweat will evapourate through, during exertion it tends to get a little bit damp inside. Sizes are bit large e.g. if you're a Medium try a Small[Update 20/09/07] By no means as breathable as more expensive materials like Gore-Tex, but you wouldn't expect it of waterproof clothing at this kind of price. Even in small size, for me anyway, they are too baggy and shapeless in the leg and the trouser ankle flaps about a bit around shoe/boot, but this isn't a problem if you just want to stay dry, it's just slightly annoying. | | Overall: They do what they're advertised to do. VFM.[Update 20/09/07] Still using them after 2 years or so. Reproofed a couple of times. They ain't fabulous but for the price I'm very happy with them. As I now use Montane FeatherLite pants as shower resistant overtrousers, I only use the Pakkas in very heavy rain. Mine weigh 210g (S). |

| 'EXCELLENT VALUE - PRETTY GOD PERFORMANCE' | | Strengths: Full calf length zip (and popper)means even with my size 12 hooves I can get them on easily.
Surprisingly waterproof for the price and noticeably better breathability than cheaper overtrousers.
Reasonably tough fabric for it's weight. | | Weaknesses: Supplied 'crag-pac' whilst allowing easy stuffing away of the trousers doesn't condense the pack size as much as it could.
Whilst breathability is pretty good in cool weather and only a steady pace they get a little sweaty with exertion.
Whilst far more than showerproof, prolonged heavy driving rain overwhelmed to the point that the exterior of my under trousers were quite damp (but not saturated). | | Overall: Having used cheaper overtrousers (Regatta, Peter Storm et.al.) in the past and found them a pain to get on over boots and either barely showerproof or so sweaty they got you as wet as if you'd left them in the pack, these were a pleasant surprise.
I've got the Pakka jacket which isn't bad for the money, and whilst overtrousers have a far easier job to do, these comparitively are very good.
They're not perfect but perform fairly well for a reasonable price (and can often be found for about half the rrp). They're light enough to stow in a pack just in case and will certainly keep you dry enough in even bad conditions, long enough to get a bit of shelter.

| 'TOP BUDGET BUY' | | Strengths: The material feels sturdy but is still light. I found them easy to get on over my size 9.5 boots. They have an elasticated waist with a tie. The bottoms have a good zip and a stud fitting which meant the fitted well around the tops of my boots.
I also found them easy to roll up and fit in the provided stuff sac.
I put these to the test on a walk through puddles, a shallow river, a scree section and long grass and they performed just fine. I've not had the opportunity to test them in heavy rain but i'm sure I'll get the chance soon :-( | | Weaknesses: I found them quite baggy but that might just be my short legs. | | Overall: I think these now retail at £35. The sho I went to had them reduced to £22 which I thought was a good buy. I don't think you'll find a sturdier pair at that price that are as breathable and waterproof as these. |

| 'NOT BAD , BUT...' | | Strengths: For the price a decent overtrouser , great for light rain or as wind proofer . | | Weaknesses: Heavy rain . They don't work in continuous downpours . | | Overall: A decent trouser which is very lightweight but for backpacking over a period of days will not keep trousers / tracksters dry underneath . I've not tried re-proofing my pair . I will shortly . |

| 'GREAT BUY!' | | Strengths: Pretty tough-have not been shredded by the brambles I been climbing through in my fieldwork Fairly waterproof. Got them very wet in NZ Quite breathable-especially for the price. | | Weaknesses: Are starting to lose their waterproofing-sure reproofing will do the trick. A layer of condensation will build up if weather is warm or you are working hard. Difficult to fit over my big burma boots (maybe this is a problem with the ladies fit) | | Overall: Great buy-I got mine for £15 from a Craghoppers outlet! I'm very happy with them. I don't see the point in spending a lot on waterproof trousers-I put them through so much abuse in fieldwork/sliding down NZ mountainsides they need to be easily replaceable and I'm not made of money! Great budget buy for hill walking, but perhaps not for winter mountaineering types. |
