''DELIVERANCE' STYLE WATERPROOF HAT'
Strengths:
Warm
Waterproof
Adjustable
Peak keep the sun? and other stuff out of your eyes
Weaknesses:
Warmth
No good under a helmet
Wired peak deforms a bit too easily
Can take a while to dry after getting soaked.
You look like an extra from 'Deliverance'
Overall:
Generally, it's great, especially if you're weraing a smock. Good entertainment value when you grab it out your pack and see what shape the wired peak is this time. Be careful what you use as a chin strap! Don't bring a Banjo...

'THE WINTER HAT'
Strengths:
Very warm, fits heads well, stays on, keeps ears warm
Weaknesses:
very warm!
Overall:
A great winter hat. Really, really warm - great for howling winds and show everywhere. Too hot when it is just cold. I've added an underchin strap for added hoolie blowing protection, but it's not been needed yet due to the excellent fit.

'WARM & WATERPROOF WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE INDIANA JONES'
Strengths:
Waterproof. Keeps your head & ears warm. Adjustable peak.
Weaknesses:
Can get too warm (especially going up hill).
Overall:
No drawstring but you can adjust the tightness at the back with velcro strap. Hearing can be muffled but you wear this to keep warm and that means covering your ears) so what do you expect! If needed you can turn up the ear flaps (and then look a bit daft). Comes in black. Much better than wearing the hood on my coat & as effective. Will be part of my kit from now on.

'excellent warm hat'
Strengths:
waterproof and very warm
Weaknesses:
I might have a big head but I find even the large a little tight after wearing it for long periods, ( even fully adjusted out)
Overall:
I lost my wooly hat 5 years ago and had to buy one of these to replace it. I thought it was expensive at the time but it's served me well since then

'Great hat for the winter hills'
Strengths:
Durable, warm and waterproof
Weaknesses:
nothing that I can think of, maybe a bit too warm at times!
Overall:
I have had mine for about 9 or 10 years I think (certainly had it at school!) and it is still going strong. They may cost a fair bit at first glance, but no other hat has stayed with me for so long.

'Do you really need one ?'
Strengths:
Warm, waterproof. Keeps out worst of rain and wind without the need for a jacket hood.
Weaknesses:
Peak design reduces visibility. Windproof ear flaps reduce hearing. Wired peak is easily bent out of shape and hard to re-form. Bulky to pack compared with a fleece or woolly hat. Doesn't fit well under a helmet. Launders poorly. Not very breathable once you warm up. And at this price they should provide a securing cord, not just looped retainers.
Overall:
I am surprised Lowe or one of their competitors haven't tweaked this design to get it right yet. Perhaps they're just blinded by the sales figures, because despite its faults, this is probably still the best headgear of this style currently available for walking in bad weather. Useless for climbing or skiing though, and not recommended for either.

However it's overkill if you already have a good hood on your shell jacket, in which case a simple fleece or woolly hat is enough addition for cold weather, won't compromise vision or hearing so much, and will allow your sweaty dome to breathe.

'you really need one!'
Strengths:
Waterproof, windproof and warm.
Weaknesses:
Can't think of any, though can be abit warm.
Overall:
Still performing many, many washes later.
It as many imitators and is not the trendiest bit of gear, but so many sales tells it own story.

'I can't hear anything....'
Strengths:
Warm, waterproof, classic and you can choose whatever sort of fastening cord you want
Weaknesses:
Temporary deafness inherent in design
Overall:
If you're after a peaked mountain cap for winter use because you absolutely, positively hate wearing a hood, then this is the one for you. The design was tweaked last season so the strap sits below the nobble on the back of your head, but it's not perfect. I carry one often, but rarely wear it because not being able to hear properly irritates the hell out of me. It also needs a tweak so you can wear it as a simple cap (ie: ears exposed) without folding the ear flaps inside it and this altering the internal volume of the hat.

It is well made though and if this is what you want from a hat, go for it.

'IT'S A LITTLE OTT, BUT STILL GREAT'
Strengths:
Warm, waterpoof, windproof, breathable. It will last for ages, making the price per year of ownership tiny.
Weaknesses:
A tad too warm, but taking it off for a second, or even just lifting it a little is enough to overcome it. A bit pricey
Overall:
If you are confronted by nad weather wear a waterproof, if you are confronted by slightly wet, or even just damp weather, or if it is really windy, this piece of kit is the top hat.
