DODGY

Kills midges-no doubting that.
Leaked a tiny amount and melted my exped dry bag, turning it into goo that stuck to everything else!
Would've been better off without it. Not even midges, when bivvying in Wales in July could've been as annoying as all my stuff being covered in DEETy exped dry bag goo/

USELESS

none
melts plastic
doesn't work
Ok, so it obviously works for some people.
I seem to be particularly attractive to midges, and have found nothing yet to keep them at bay, ‘though I hear Avon moisturiser may work.
I have fond(!) memories of a day on Ranok moor in September, tipping with rain and swarming with midges. I was plastered head to toe in this stuff, but the midges just ignored it and ate me anyway. I must have looked something like Frankenstein’s monster as the rain had washed the insect repellent into my eyes blinding me; I was covered in swarming midges and stumbling around with my hands out in front of me! Oh what fun.

AN EFFECTIVE CLOTHING TREATMENT

Repels a large number of insect types. Used on clothing/footwear, appears to be long lasting.
Doesn't repel all insects, specifically sandflies and some kinds of tick. Melts many plastics (including - a classic packaging error - the plastic bag it's supplied in for travel). Irritates the skin when directly applied. In my experience, evaporates faster on the skin than the 50% concentration.
I've used this in the testing conditions of the Amazon jungle as well as less insect-rich environments. Whilst it's very effective and durable applied to clothing and footwear, it's irritating on the skin, and not as long-lasting as the 50% version. I have used it on synthetic clothing without problems, but I've heard it can dissolve certain fabrics. Due to its propensity to spread and melt in transit, I would recommend you use this only to treat natural-fibre clothing pre-trip, and take a less concentrated solution with you to use on the skin. Remember it's not a full-spectrum repellant and that you will need to supplement with permethrin and oil where necessary.

The best repellant I have found...but....

It really does work, and well at that
Lasts for a long time as only a small amount needed
It melts synthetic materials, so keep it away from tents/goretex etc
It may cause skin problems for some people
This is very potent stuff, and it does it's job admirably. The only problem is that it may be too strong for some, and I am not sure about the long term issues of dowsing yourself in it!

I field tested Expedition 100 in the Amazon basin and it kept the Mozzies away out there, and has performed equally well in Scotland against the midge. If it has done the job in these two places then it can't be all that bad!

Doesn't come off with sweat too quickly either, the strength is enough to take some dilution when working hard - just make sure the sweat doesn't drip into your eyes when wearing it though - it stings!
