NOT THAT EASY TO USE

Very tough
Easy to carry
Heavy
Difficult to pour from
A bit bulky
Like all Ortlieb products, it is very well manufactured and the fabric seems particularly durable. Strong webbing handles that show no sign of wear. The handles make it easy to carry, even when full.

The main problem is that it is a nightmare to actually get the water out of it when using it solo wildcamping. You need one hand to hold the bag up, another to open the cap and a third to steady the container that you are pouring water into.

It's also fairly bulky when empty as the cap assembly is quite large and it's not all that light either, weighing 133g. Mine has stains from iodine tablets that I can't seem to get rid of, either.

EXCEPTIONALLY USEFUL BIT OF KIT

Lightweight (when empty!), doesn't poke your back through a pack when full, tough, reliable, multiple uses
Difficult to pour when full. Needs to be carefully dried. Water must be below 60 degrees C. Not suitable for other liquids (but who's carrying 4 Litres of Scotch anyway?).
(Reviewing the 4L model bought in 1997 and as good as new a decade later)
This is one of those items I always reach for when packing for a longer trip. Even if I can't immediately think why I'll need it, it goes in. Because time after time it has been 'just the thing' for so many different uses. Apart from the obvious function of carrying large quantities of water for camping or travel into arid regions, it has been variously used as a travel pillow in the bus, a hot water bottle for stomach cramps, a shower (left hanging from a tree to warm in the sun), a make-shift hydration bladder and a fire extinguisher! It is very light when empty and has proven to be surprisingly puncture resistant. It can be carried by the handles easily enough but a simple addition of webbing or spare cord turns it into a bum-bag. This can be very handy if you need to fetch water from a stream whilst keeping your hands free to scramble out again. My only gripe is that it can be hard to pour when it is full. It works best if it can be hung upside down from a tree, for example. But even then, the screw valve goes directly from ‘closed’ to ‘torrent’ without much in between. It should always be cleaned (Ortlieb suggest using denture-cleaning tablets) and thoroughly dried out between uses.
Highly recommended.
