THE STANDARD 3-4 SEASON BOOT

The most important thing about a hiking boot is that it must fit. The Scarpa SL M3 is therefore a good choice for the serious walker because it comes in three different width fittings B, BX, BXX- regular, wide and extra wide. Mine are BX wide. None of the other brands would fit my foot. Luckily the Scarpa Sl M3 is an excellent boot. This is the standard boot for year round walking and has a B1 crampon rating for use with G10s etc. fine for basic winter walking. If you are looking for something winter specific then go for the Manta with its B2 crampon rating.
Heavy. Can be expensive, so try to buy them in the sale. Like all leather boots, you have to spend some time breaking them in, and these have particular tough/thick leather so it might take a bit longer.
At first, I was worried about the extra weight of these boots, but soon forgot about this when confronted with my first boulder field and many river crossings, where the boot's toughness, extra ankle and heel support became invaluable. The lack of a goretex lining is actually a positive in my view. I keep them well waxed and have never had wet feet, there is also no risk of a lining failure in the long term. They should last for years. A very reliable boot.
