Berghaus Velum Jacket

Berghaus Velum Jacket
Great to use a Gore-Tex jacket that's right up there and kicking hard in the breathability donkey derby.

First Look

Oh my LORDY who the 'F' would walk around in a 2 tone red and blue jacket like that!

Looks pretty tame to me by recent standards..... The zips have even avoided being a 'nice' luminous colour

Posted: 06/07/2011 at 13:54

I tried one on recently and got told I look like 'a proper trainspotter'

That is all

Are you more concerned with what the jacket does for you or for other people?

Function over form for me

GOF
compared to some of the 1970s and 1980s offerings ...would say its quite tame really...

It's an improvement on the prototype -

Ha!! Good work, Grumps!!

Have people not seen ski jackets? or the mid 80's purple monstrosities?

I would, though I'd prefer the blue and red the other way around.

Ah, nostalgia... this is going back 20 years for Berghaus

The most subdued jacket I could find back in 1991 (I've still got it somewhere)

I drew the line at this version!

I would if the only alternative was DPM.

Blue and Red are the traditional colour of Berghaus.

Matts 'blue jacket would have been great for boarding a footie special on a rainy saturday in the late 1980's.

Matt - I'm glad you could find a photo as I was reminiscing about my old Trango when I saw this thread. Blue red and yellow and lasted me an age and likely still in use after being donated following years as a standby in the boot of my car. Of course I have moved on with the latest developments in taste and style so use Paramo now in order to naturally remain at the cutting edge of fashion....

Nice pink and light blue  Berghaus Goretex jacket reduced to £47 in my local TKMaxx last week.

Good for Berghaus.  Retro styling has to be worth a try?  Its a great alternative to the minimalist Scandic/Arcteryx look that dominates premium outdoor kit at the moment

Posted: 07/07/2011 at 22:17

Maboza, I make no comment on the actual jacket i.e. good or bad BUT I was just taken by the thought that a designer designed it with the 2 tone red and blue then a manager actually signed it off as such for production. If it had been red OR blue no probs.... 'strangely' you don't see people walking around in these types of colour schemes, wonder if its a publicity thing?

I kept hoping that one would make it into a kit recycling 'lucky bag' so that I could snaffle it. That's perhaps why you still have it

Back in the early days all I had was army surplus. Closest I ever came to something like that was when the school hillwalking club bought us waterproofs; bright orange jacket and trousers that wouldn't have looked out of place on a North Sea trawler

Back in the early days, all I had was an anorak and a pair of wellies Reckon it's still likely that I've done more miles in wellies than in 'proper' outdoor footwear

Like your new name, Kev

you know the reason it does NOT apply that "someone wouldn't be seen dead" wearing this is it is being worn by the Invisible Man, he doesn't care, he's butt-naked anyway apart from the jacket. He's quite well off too, as all makes seem to book him, or his family, for showing off clothes. I reckon there's more than 1 out there, a short fat one who's booked by Paramo, he's probably drinking free beer when noone notices a glass move by itself, and a tall skiny one by Rab.

I think it looks good, not that that would either persuade or dissuade me from buying it.

Perhaps you are so vehemently against the colours ids because it would clash with that gold pack you were on about buying

My old man probably would. No sense of style whatsoever. He is almost 70 though, probably the same age as whoever designed that jacket and the Rab Stretch NeoShell Jacket too!

Would slapping a picture of a Tithonian therapod render it acceptable ???

I think its the way the red goes half way up your head before turning blue that really makes this one look so bad, like your sunburnt whilst wearing a blue shower cap. Would I let the colours of a jacket put me of buying it - YES I BLOODY WELL WOULD. Why do manufacterers go with these horrendous designs? there is a reason why green tents outsell red ones by 5 - 1 (i remembering hearing that somewhere). So many times I've gone to buy a piece of clothing only to find the only colours left in stock are the ones that look like they belong on a clown that nobody wants.

Mind you, if your on a budget I've noticed these colours normally end up as end of line bargains or turn up on e-bay with massive discounts.

Amyone remember 'Conquer the Arctic', televised back about 1990 where the teams were all kitted out in Trango Extreme jackets/salopettes in a variety of bizarre colours?

Always fancied a Trango Extreme myself but ended up with a Phoenix Opal, Royal Blue with contrasting Lime and Cerise flashes and lime drawcords, the colours do tend to date it a little...

Talking about the Trango, anyone remember the Berghaus Himalaya (Extreme?), like the Trango without the contrasting wear patches.

Looks like that arc' bag would go nicely on the fuschia Trango... oooooh

Had a look at one yesterday.

Dreadful colour.

Thus ended my interest in it.
