What's It For? Crux distinguishes the Torq from the Flak range by saying that it's designed for alpine summer mountaineering and less technical climbing where greater breathability and lower weight are 'prime considerations' - it's also worth bearing in mind that the Torq has two conventional chest pockets which arguably makes ...  Continue reading

It does the same job as the under arm vents that you get on quite a few jackets, but this time the vents have been moved, presumably because Paramo thinks there are better pickings to be had on the upper arms.

Problem with under-arm vents is hot air rises, so having a vent underneath your arm isn't the most efficient place to go, aside from the fact the arm will also restrict airlfow to and from it.

On the other hand, one thing a pit-zip tends not to do is let the rain in, what with it being shielded as it is.  Vents that don't let the rain in might be seen as a Good Thing on a  waterproof...

So vents like Paramo's work better as air vents, which is good, but they also work better as rain vents, which isn't.  As usual, you choose, you lose...

I've been wearing one of these this winter and I rarely end up carrying it because the venting is so good.  If it were warm, I'd leave it at home without a doubt.  But for cold weather it is a fantastic jacket.  My only gripe is probably the sizing issue - but that's pretty minor really.  I've worn this for climbing, walking and skiing and I'm really impressed.
