It does the same job as the under arm vents that you get on quite a few jackets, but this time the vents have been moved, presumably because Paramo thinks there are better pickings to be had on the upper arms.
Problem with under-arm vents is hot air rises, so having a vent underneath your arm isn't the most efficient place to go, aside from the fact the arm will also restrict airlfow to and from it.
On the other hand, one thing a pit-zip tends not to do is let the rain in, what with it being shielded as it is. Vents that don't let the rain in might be seen as a Good Thing on a waterproof...
So vents like Paramo's work better as air vents, which is good, but they also work better as rain vents, which isn't. As usual, you choose, you lose...
