HMMMMM
It works ok. It has a light.
The wheel slips on maps alot. Its hard to follow routes with it as the wheel is thick and so you cant see the path underneath. The blurb with it says it has a +-4% error to it. Now, thats now bad if you only plan to measure short distances but if you measure 10 miles at once that could almost be half a mile out!
If I had my time again I wouldn't get one of these, I got better results using pins and string...

WHY BOTHER ?
Does what it says.
Fiddly; life's moved on.
I bought this before I discovered mapping software, hardly used it and then have never used it since buying CD maps well over a year ago. It's also a calculator, but the buttons are tiny and you need to remember to tell it not to be a map measurer beforehand, or else it just gets too confusing. I wouldn't waste your money on this. Just think of it as £16 you can put towards some mapping software instead.

USEFUL
The automatic conversion to km is very useful compared to analogue measurers. Once you have entered the map scale, it will remembers for future measurements.
The wheel can sometimes slip on the map, giving inaccurate results. The wheel is also slightly thick making a twisting route more difficult to measure
It takes the hassle out of map scale conversions.
