To put it in perspective, our medium test ...  Continue reading

How does it compare to patagonia nano? I was looking for something of the kind for nordic skiing and winter running.

Only seen this in-store so far (and not in my size, so couldn't try it on) but have a look at Joe Newton's review from earlier this week:

Excellent! But still Rab's microlight alpine is only 300g!

Posted: 13/11/2010 at 08:33

I was in Snow and Rock yesterday and i'm sure the Microlight Alpine said 340g on the ticket, the same as the Xenon. I guess thats based on a Medium so the Large would be 350g ish.

I suspect the Microlights warmer than the 60g Primaloft Xenon but not as versatile as you cant wear it over stuff if its damp/wet.

Yep you're right.

As per Ultralight outdoors gear (who weigh things! Medium) its 302 for the Zenon and 360 for the microlite. The microlite certainly should be a bit warmer mind.

I'd guess that the hooded nano is very similar, although Pati quote that as 396g. A little bit of that will be down to material differences but they're using a light shell fabric too, so some down to features - more pocket zips it seems?

Perhaps partially the cut too. I actually found the sleeves on the Zenon I found somewhere terribly short but maybe that was just me

Rab with short sleeves - something's wrong with the world!

I thought that long sleeves was their speciality, not very good for climers then.

It varies

Sometimes they do do very long sleeves, sometimes shorter. Normally pretty long, even rarely long enough for me. (My proportions are a bit silly so I've been indulging in a hunt to find things which fit past couple of years!).

Not sure, it might well have been some quirk of how the way they've cut it fitted on me. But did surprise me slightly. Anyway always worth trying stuff on.

Their climbers primaloft jacket is probably meant to be the generator alpine. Heavier of course but warmer & more weather resistance. Longer sleeves on that

The Xenon i tried on in size Large fitted me fine. I take this size for nearly all my gear. Dont think this really helps much, i never seem to have a problem with the fit anyway....

Good, now I'll need to decide between Xenon and Arcteryx atom lt!

Posted: 15/11/2010 at 07:06

So anyone got one of these yet?

Just wondering what the fit is actually like, since I've read one or two write ups suggesting it as a mid-layer, whereas I want it to fit over a baselayer and Paramo Quito for reststops etc.

Hi Richard - have a look at Joe Newton's review (mentioned in an earlier comment above) to get a clearer idea of fit. The Xenon looks to have a closer, more active cut than the Rab Generator or Photon jackets which are more your traditional, throw-over, belay tops. The sweet thing about the Xenon is that it's a full-zip jacket with a hood for almost as light as Rab's own Generator Vest! And yes, it only has 60g rather than the Generator's 100g Primaloft insulation, but it's got sleeves and a hood so I bet it's warmer!

Well I fondled one today. Very nice and stupidly light, but actually feels like it would add significant warmth.

It is a slimmer fit than the traditional belay jacket (well my Photon anyway), which was my concern when reading the mid-layer tag. So normal size for mid-layer use, but maybe a size up if you plan to throw it on top of other stuff.
