Kahtoola MICROspikes
We can think of a good few days on our local Peak District hills, when these would have been ideal and crampons would have felt like overkill

New for review on the site are Kahtoola MICROspikes an interesting quick-fitting solution to staying in one piece on icy terrain without crampons.MICROspikes are a bit like car snow chains for your shoes, but with added points. Brilliant bit of kit! I tested them out by running around a ice rink! Kept complete grip and traction.

Also used them on steep compacted snow/ice slopes and they coped perfectly.

Well worth the money.

Highly recommended in TGO review also.

Haven't got any myself and won't get out much this winter due to other work but will see about getting some ready for next year.

Very versatile.

I wanted some last year, then forgot when the snow went.  I really needed a pair this year but I couldn't find them anywhere (in stock).

I won't be out for a while as our Baby is due in a week or two, must remember to get some for next year!

Rar, In case you're still tempted, Needles sports has quite a few in stock... Got them there myself last month. They're really bril.

I borrowed TBW's to use on my approach shoes on our visit to Corrieshalloch Gorge last weekend - they're brilliant!

Got mine from Sandbaggers, £41 including postage.

(Not really given them a huge workout, but trotting up and down on the local ice sheets in increasingly light footwear I was pretty impressed)

There's also the Petzl Charlet Anti-slip shoe spikes. I've tried a pair briefly and they seem to do a good job. Cheaper, but probably not as long lasting as the Kahtoola spikes.

I have both. Both are excellent but for different things. Petzel thingy great for using around town - snow frozen on pavements etc.

But for varying conditions in the country I use the microspikes. They're light enough to carry both, unless you're sleeping out & really need to watch weight.

Yeah, yeah... we're just waiting for the next mini ice age now - that's coming by Royal Mail as well

By the time I had managed to get hold of a pair last winter all the snow had gone. They've been in my pack every outing this winter and used a lot. Have only had the proper crampons on once so far this winter

Tested them substaintially on Ben Wyvis last weekend and found their limit on a fairly steep slope with enough soft stuff on top of hard stuff to stop them gripping effectively but was very pleased with how they worked Suspect it was the combination of the type of snow and angle that meant I was going no further in them

I just got a card to say there's something waiting at the delivery office Jon. Should I just leave it there?

Why not wait until The Day After Tomorrow......

Hmmm... I'll get my coat then...

Yep, I got a pair of these myself this year (well last year) they're brilliant, I can highly recommend them. If you're going to get some though - get them now before the snow comes back.

I got mine at the climber's shop in Ambleside, but I know they sold out once and it was the same story at the shop in Windermere.

Me and my son and went up Snowdon last Tuesday (Pyg track) and put on the spikes when we'd reached the top of the ridge.  They made the going alot easier and made the ascent up the snow-covered zig zags much safer and easier as well. We never saw so many folk without any spikes/crampons look so terrified! Not many people at the summit (4!) which was great! For more extreme conditions I would use crampons though.
