The translucent housing allows the light to blind you on the march. that's a big inconvinience

I've not found that to be the case, how's that happening? The reflector around the light isn't translucent, so virtually all the light is directed forward with just a small amount leaking out to the sides - which is good for safety in some situations, I'd say.
