Cheap, functional, get one.....

waterproof goretex
not as heavy as you would have thought
hoooooge
stealth mode active - camo colour!
no zips to break
its pretty basic
no complete face closure
no mossie net
Well, this is a really underrated bit of kit. Picked up two of these recently for £20 each. The thing about this bivvy bag is that it is just enormous and when taken into account that it is made of goretex the weight of 800g is not bad at all. It is waterproof (for now) and you can literally chuck it down anywhere and crawl inside for instant cover. I take this with me on long winter day walks as a just in case. As a main shelter obviously it is basic as there is no complete face closure (just a drawstring) and no mossie net. Having said that I take a very light small tarp for the head end and a small mossie net for the summer months.
Its not for the fainthearted but bivvying and especially bivvying in one of these beasties is FUN. And for £20 you cant go wrong!

Bombproof and WILL keep you dry.

Tough, relatively cheap and full goretex construction. Never got wet in mine ever.
Pretty heavy compared to others available but generally cheaper too.
One of those bits of kit the army actually managed to do well! Mines never let me get the slightest bit wet while being pretty breathable at the same time. Acres of space inside so great for those of a larger build or if you just want plenty of space.

AN ESSENTIAL BIT OF KIT THAT I NEVER CAMP WITHOUT.

Hardwearing, cheap, warm and roomy.
Not super-light, but makes no difference to me, it's saved my bacon so many times I'd never be without it.
I used an issued one for three years of Territorial Army service, and bought my own immediately after leaving. I've slept in wet bogs, under tarps, in tents and more than a few times out on bare Scottish hillside in nothing but this bivi and a good sleeping bag. One of my favourite bits of kit, and at the price you can get them for, should be an essential bit of kit for any backpacker.
