Errwood Reservoir

1 more image
Short description
A popular summer tourist haunt, the Goyt Valley offers a choice of scenic walks in an almost traffic free environment. This route completes a full circuit of the upper, Errwood, reservoir and the headwaters of the River Goyt. In winter, with the bracken less dominant it makes an ideal short day when the big hills are too far away, or in summer you can extend the day by taking in Pym's Chair, Errwood Hall or the Cat & Fiddle.

From the car park turn at the south end of the reservoir take the path on the right, into the woods. A fork is met almost immediately, where you keep left to run alongside the road, before the path rejoins the road. Continue to just beyond Goytsclough Quarry, then take the path on the right back into the trees and continue to a left turn, with the wall on your right. Cross the wall as you leave the plantation and head back to the Goyt Valley road. Turn right here, keeping an eye open for the odd car coming from your left. Take the road along Goyts Clough, past the small waterfall and on to the old bridge at Derbyshire Bridge. A few minutes further along the road is the information centre and toilets, with the Cat and Fiddle pub half a mile up the road.

Ascent:280 metres

From Derbyshire bridge the first half mile follows the long abandoned old Buxton to Macclesfield road as you slowly climb out of the valley. Ignore the paths heading off to the right, but take the path on the left as the old road reaches a high point just beyond the start of Berry Clough. Take the path to a T junction, then turn left to start dropping back down towards the river. The obvious path meanders right and left, crossing a small stream to join the right hand side of Berry Clough. A further small stream crossing leads you into the bracken which dominates the slopes of the upper Goyt. Ignore the river crossing where the path turns right, and continue along the path above the river to a fork, where keeping right avoids the densest of the bracken. Now head across the slope, countouring above the River Goyt, to where the bracken starts to close in again as you meet a stream. Cross the stream and continue ahead to a wall, which is crossed at the field corner. Now follow the wall away from the river and head across Wild Moor, using the wall as a guide. Cross another small stream and a wall and head north east to a 90 degree junction in the wall on your left. Follow the wall round to the right and across another stream, to another wall which can be crossed at the corner. The next stream is Wildmoorstone Brook, one of the major feeders of the Goyt, which can be crossed slightly higher up. Head upstream alongside the stream for a few yards to a smaller stream on joining from the left. Follow this small stream to the road, with a triangular pond to your right. Turn left onto the road and descend the steep incline once used as part of the Cromford and High Peak Railway. Pass Bunsal Cob on your left and head onto, and across, the embankment between Errwood and Fernilee Reservoirs. Once across the embankment turn left to a choice of road or just off-road paths back alongside the reservoir to your start point
