Leg:1
From:Pelter Bridge Car Park
To:Nab Scar
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY364059
Grid Ref:NY356073
Ascent:N/A

Leave your car at the Pelter Bridge Car park and walk back towards the main road, crossing the cattle grid as you go. Once on the pavement you need to cross the road and head up on the minor road towards Rydal Hall. Continue on this road until you reach the entrance to Hart Head Farm. At this point you leave the road, via a gate, and follow a well worn path up towards Nab Scar. The path to the summit is fairly steep but the views along Lake Windermere make the climb well worth it. Eventually the gradient levels out and the summit is within reach.

Leg:2
From:Nab Scar
To:Heron Pike
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY356073
Grid Ref:NY356083
Ascent:N/A

From the summit of Nab Scar the route ahead is obvious, a well worn and wide path leads onwards towards the 2nd Wainwright of the day, Heron Pike. The path is much less steep and provides a welcome relief from the climb at the start. At the summit of Heron Pike, a path leads down to Grasmere which could provide an escape route in bad weather.

Leg:3
From:Heron Pike
To:Great Rigg
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY356083
Grid Ref:NY356104
Ascent:N/A

As with the previous leg, the way ahead is fairly clear. From Heron Pike, the climb to Great Rigg looks formidable in reality it is not too difficult. Greatrigg Man marks the summit as well as marking a good place to look back along route already completed. The views from Great Rigg are excellent and the classic horseshoe shape of the valley is evident.

Leg:4
From:Great Rigg
To:Fairfield
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY356104
Grid Ref:NY358117
Ascent:N/A

From the summit of Great Rigg it is a short walk to Fairfield. Again navigation is easy with the route ahead evident. The summit of Fairfield is rocky and contains several summit shelters. The summit provides excellent views all round, with many of the major Lakes fells in view.

Leg:5
From:Fairfield
To:Hart Crag
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY358117
Grid Ref:NY369112
Ascent:N/A

From the Summit of fairfield take the path that leads onwards in the horseshoe direction towards Hart Crag. This leg is fairly easy with a wide path and generally low gradient. Along this leg the views of the valley all the way down to Windermere really open up and make up for the hard work of the climbs, Coniston Water and Esthwaite Water are also visible.

Leg:6
From:Hart Crag
To:Dove Crag
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY369112
Grid Ref:NY374104
Ascent:N/A

Once at Hart Crag, the way ahead to Dove Crag is again obvious. Follow the wall down and the summit is within easy reach. Dove crag has a large and prominent cairn and this can help in the 'Fairfield mist' which often covers the mountains. From Dove crag it is downhill all the way back, which makes it a very pleasant end to the walk.

Leg:7
From:Dove Crag
To:Low Pike
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY374104
Grid Ref:NY373078
Ascent:N/A

Dove crag to Low pike is a relatively easy walk, ensuring the you stay near to the wall. On the way to Low Pike you will take in High Pike, which is the penultimate Wainwright of the day. From Low Pike views of Ambleside are splendid as are those down the Lake.

Leg:8
From:Low Pike
To:Rydal Park
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY373078
Grid Ref:NY372055
Ascent:N/A

From Low Pike continue along the path. The gradient increases quite steeply as you rapidly lose height heading towards Ambleside. Once you reach Low Sweden Bridge take the path that leads through a gate and down next to Scandale Beck, heading in the direction of the A591. This path should bring you out in Rydal Park.

Leg:9
From:Rydal Park
To:Pelter Bridge Car Park
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:NY372055
Grid Ref:NY364059
Ascent:N/A

Once through the gate and into Rydal Park head right and continue through the park. As you pass through Rydal Hall keep right and you will emerge on the road leading up from the A591. Take a left and return to your car at Pelter Bridge.

Facilities

The only Cafe along the route is at Rydal Hall, just before you emerge at the edge of the estate.
