Grid Ref:SO056175
Grid Ref:SO051193
Ascent:N/A

From the entrance to the car park, take the Beacons Way northward, to the right of the trees. Follow this path north around Craig y Fan Ddu with the steep slope dropping down to your right hand side. You will reach the Blaen Caerfanell stream where the path splits. The Beacons Way goes off westward (to your right), but you should cross over the stream and carry on north along the (now smaller) path.

To:Fan y Big
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:SO051193
Grid Ref:SO037206
Ascent:N/A

After crossing the stream, continue north until you reach an obvious junction in the path. Here, take the southwesterly path to your left and continue along this with the hillside falling down to your right (eventually you rejoin the Beacons Way). You will reach a fork in the path where you should take the right hand fork up to the summit of Fan y Big.

Leg:3
From:Fan y Big
To:Cribyn
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:SO037206
Grid Ref:SO024213
Ascent:N/A

From the top of Fan y Big take the steep westward path down the side of the hill. At the base of this descent you meet a crossroads. Continue straight over this junction, up the steep path, and follow this round to the summit of Cribyn.

NOTE: If you don't fancy the look of the ascent up Cribyn there is an alternate path which diverts around the south side of the hill.

Leg:4
From:Cribyn
To:Corn Du
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:SO024213
Grid Ref:SO007213
Ascent:N/A

Take the path west-southwest descending from Cribyn and rejoin the Beacons Way, where you turn right and take the steepest ascent of the walk up Pen-y-Fan. After enjoying the fantastic views from this peak, take the southwest path down the hillside and then straight back up Corn Du.

Leg:5
From:Corn Du
To:Car Park
Distance:N/A
Grid Ref:SO007213
Grid Ref:SO056175
Ascent:N/A

Take the southern path down from Corn Du and you will encounter a junction of various paths. Continue straight over (south) and follow the ridge with the steep descent to your left. Follow this path, past the Upper Neuadd Reservoir until you meet a steep path which goes down the edge of the trees. Take great care on this descent as it can be VERY slippery. Cross over the dam and you will meet a small road. Follow this road southeast until you meet the Taff Trail crossing your path. There are several ways you can go but you should take the most easterly of these (passing through a gate). Follow this track along the tree line (ignore the track that appears from your left) until you reach a B road. Turn left and follow this road northeast. Before the road dips sharply down to the southeast, take the track off to your left which leads you back the car park where you started the walk.

Getting there

From the South:
Head up the A470 until you reach the roundabout with the A465 (just north of Merthyr Tydfil). At this roundabout turn right onto the A465 and take your first left. Go straight over at the crossroads and follow this road north (through Ponsticill). Follow this road all the way up to the car park which is signposted on your left 500m before you reach it.

Facilities

Only car parking and the odd picnic bench
