Starting from the Old Dungeon Ghyll the route starts with the classic approach to Bowfell, turning right along the road and through the gate then taking the long ascent of The Band from just beyond the farmhouse at Stool End. This is an unrelenting climb that seems to go on for ever, but one where you're likely to be amongst company. Eventually the ground begins to level out as you reach the start of the path to the Climbers Traverse to Bowfell. The path to Three Tarns climbs straight ahead, breaking onto the ridge at the col with Bowfell to the right and Crinkle Crags left.

After a brief respite at Three Tarns the route continues upwards, following the obvious path to the first of the five tops that make up the ever poopular Crinkle Crags. Take each of the five Crinkles in turn, reaching the high point at Long Top, and taking care as you approach the "bad step", which can be avoided by a path to the right that drops down to contour the flank, or a narrow track to the left just before the step. The main path improves as it starts the descent towards Red Tarn, but our route heads off left, with the option of taking in Cold Pike ahead, climbing again breifly before dropping steeply to the road at Cockley Beck.

From Cockley Beck the path leads steeply up the North side of the imposing Grey Friar, even more unrelenting than the earlier section up The Band. From the summit of Grey Friar turn North East and descend to Fairfield Col, where the path splits. The left fork takes you up grassy slopes to Great carrs, passing the remains of a crashed plane along the way, with the right fork giving a short cut to Swirl How. From Great Carrs turn south along the ridge to reach Swirl How after just a third of a mile.

Swirl How offers a number of choices for the descent into Coniston, with the southern ridge to Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man and the east to Wetherlam providing the high level alternatives to a descent to Levers Water. Our route takes the Wetherlam option, staring with a descent of the Prison Band. Continue up the far side from the col, passing Black Sails on the right, and on to the summit of Wetherlam. From Wetherlam you can choose to drop down early, following the stream down Red Gill to pass just above Coppermines Youth Hostel, or stay high and navigate Lad Stones ridge. As you drop down the ridge from Lad Stones the path swings slightly left to avoid the crags, joining the Tilberthwaite path just before reaching Church beck. From here the path leads directly down into Coniston. |
