Long description

This route is not to difficult however you should take extreme care at Gordale Scar as you have to climb up the middle of a waterfall, easier when dry as the limestone can be difficult and slippery.

If you are not confident you can take a longer route up the top of the road by the side and across the fields.

Facilities

Plenty of parking available at the local Park Authority site. A couple of pubs and a very nice but small cafe for refreshments and decent food which is well priced. Area does fill up quick at weekends and in summer months.

Discuss this route

I did this walk last week. Starting in Malham, past Janet's Foss and on to Gordale Scar, which was flowing quite strong and was too much for me to get up. There was however a chap there who took 2 babies up in harnesses on his back! I felt lame, but have absolutely no scrambling experience, so went the long way round, which was actually great as the views from the top and on the way up are beautiful.

The walk across the top to Malham Tarn had to be cut short as it was getting very dark, and indeed the last stretch to Malham Cove was a brilliantly spooky and starlit stroll which was only manageable thanks to a headtorch. In retrospect, I really dont want to think about how treacherous this might have been! But it is a brilliant and not at all challenging walk, from a physical or navigational point of view, but lovely scenery and geography. I would like to have a go at the scramble when its less slippery!

The walking around Malham is delightful and as you say there's is plenty to see. We did a walk around the main spots back in Nov'07 which can be seen here.

A Malham circular

I've loved that area ever since being taken round it from school on geography and geology field trips. It wasn't long until I was camping there, summer and winter, exploring every nook and cranny. I was there in the summer when I was walking the Pennine Way, and deliberately structured my route so that I would have the best part of a day to explore off-route. As for the water at Gordale Scar, I bet it was impressive. When you go back, bear in mind that the scramble is always a bit greasy and crumbling underfoot. As a kid, I had to help my geology teacher up it, and she was rather plump. Trouble was, she was facing the rock all the way up, while I was facing her and the rest of the group... and the look on their faces... I thought I'd never live it down!

It's a great walk - one of my early ones too thanks to school trips. I've been back many times. Must go again....
