How Much To Climb Everest... Eeek!

$10,000 for your gear alone? Finance site breaks down the costs of scaling the world's highest peak.

The top of the world - images by Survivor, aka Conan Harrod, the only OMer we're aware of who's climbed Everest back in 2006. But how much would it cost you to get there today?

Ever contemplated climbing the world's highest peak? You probably had a vague idea that it was expensive - last time we asked, the answer was around £40,000 for a return ticket to the summit - but not quite as costly as it actually is.

Writing on the Time Moneyland site, Katherine Tarbox has dissected the whole cost of getting up the mountain and it's sobering stuff. She calculates, for example, that you can easily splash $10,000 on gear before you've even reached the mountain - down suits, high-altitude mitts, super warm boots and so on. Not an area to skimp if you value your digits or your life.

And then there's training and preparation, the cost of the climb itself - the peak fee per person starts at $10,000 before you've even started on expedition logistics and guiding costs and, well, read the article at moneyland.time.com/2012/01/23/the-economics-of-everest and then start saving... Or you could just do the Coast to Coast instead.

The article loses credibility in the first sentence repeating the story that Prince Harry is hoping to "conquer" Everest. Isn't it the case that he is supporting the Walking With the Wounded expedition but unlikely to go beyond Base Camp?

The rest of the article may be great but I gave up there. Repeating an obvious error right at the start doesn't fill me with confidence that it's accurate.

I ignored the first three paragraphs, just skimmed them. The rest was quite interesting tbf. According to Jagged Globe, a few years back, all you need to climb Everest is the ability to climb Scottish Grade 2 (tick), proven ability to acclimatise above 5,000m (tick) and some experience climbing biggish mountains (tick) oh, and around 40,000 quid (not tick).

So I could climb Everest if I wanted to - possibly - and could justify spending that much money. You could spend a decade climbing in the Andes for that I reckon...

... then the weather's awful, your window closes and you return home ever so slightly annoyed!
