54 Climbers Summit Everest

... or was it 55? Whatever the truth, there were certainly a lot of climbers on the roof of the world last night. A record in fact.

Looks like it's been a crazy day on Everest with - according to Ananova - total of 54 climbers summiting the mountain in a window of good conditions. Nepalnews says 55, but what's the odd climber between friends eh?

Among them was Tashi Tenzing, grandson of Tenzing Norgay, who was forced to delay his attempt on the summit by a day when snow and strong winds made climbing hazardous on Tuesday night. It's the second time Tashi has climbed the mountain and he is the third generation of his family to stand on the summit.

According to this story on Ananova, Ellen Miller, 43, became the first American woman to climb Everest from both north and south and a Sherpa, Apa, reached the top for the twelfth time setting a new record for the number of ascents.

Both Apa Sherpa and Tashi Tenzing were climbing as part of the Swiss Everest 50th Anniversary Expedition.

I'm in a quandry about this news...one one side I think that the mountains are there for anyone and everyone, but the other says that surely this number of people summiting can't be good for either to people or the mountain?

I know that Nepal needs the cash from the climbing permits and such, but in the wake of what happened up there in 1996, surely queue's to get up the Hillary Step should never happen again...
