A BBC documentary shown last September has boosted the profile of the International Porter Protection Group in the UK.

The group was founded to help the trekking porter by raising awareness of their vulnerability, particularly in bad weather, at high altitude and in remote areas.

According to IPPG founder Dr Jim Duff, the film, 'Carrying the Burden', which highlighted the harsh conditions endured by expedition and trekking porters in Nepal, has brought about a 'sea change in the way the porter issue is perceived.'

In particular, more trekking companies are now seeking IPPG accreditation and, following the showing of the documentary, UK rep Ed Cartwright was inundated with both offers of support and financial contributions.

Current IPPG projects include the Porter Clothing Bank in Kathmandu - started with a $4,000 donation from writer Jon Krakauer - which now has the ability to outfit some 200 porters with warm and waterproof clothing, hats and sunglasses. The clothing is lent out to trekking companies and independent trekkers against either a deposit or a signed declaration that any damage will be made good. There's also a Porter Shelter Project, aimed at providing shelters for porters in exposed loactions including at Mera Peak and Lobuje.

For more information on the IPPG see their web site or contact UK rep Ed Cartwright by e-mail.
