An American pilot who lost both his lower legs to frostbite in a light aircraft accident in Alaska is attempting to become the first double amputee to climb Everest.

Ed Hommer, 45, from Minnesota, is part of a team planning to climb the mountain from the Tibetan side. He's quoted on Reuters as saying:

"I have been climbing since 1975. Just because I'm a double amputee, I shouldn't stop. You do the best of your abilities."
