Brits Team The North Face are up into 13th place as the field is decimated by retirements in one of the toughest adventure races ever

The 2002 Eco Challenge in Fiji has reached its seventh day and according to latest reports it's retirement carnage out there with over 50 of the original starters out of the race leaving just 27 still in the running.

Happily those 27 include two British outfits, Team The North Face Kona, who are now lying in 13th position overall, and Team A-TEK further down the field in their first Eco Challenge. Apparenlty the severity of the course may be down to recent criticism that the event was getting too soft for its own good.

Meanwhile up front the clear leaders are New Zelanders Team Seagate.com NZ and according to the official leaderboard on the Eco Challenge web site, they have a two-and-a-half hour lead over their nearest rivals. The official site is the best source of photos and general news plus latest rankings, but for information on the UK and Irish teams and a less biased view of the event, the Two Steves - the Trinnie and whatnot of adventure racing - on Sleepmonsters can't be beat.
