Everest Accident Climber Speaks

The British climber who crawled down Everest for two days after being struck by a falling American golfer is home and has been speaking to the BBC

We've had an awful lot of Everest gazing really what with the 50th anniversary celebrations and enough records to fill a Guinness Book, but here's something that really is quite extraordinary.

Conan Harrod, the British climber who was struck by a falling American - you just can't get away from 'friendly fire syndrome' even on Everest - just 250 metres below the summit has been talking to the BBC.

Harrod, from Cheadle in Cheshire, broke his leg in the incident then spent two days crawling down the mountain with help from fellow mountaineers before reaching medical help at advanced base camp.

Gallingly, the American climber who struck him was later seen teeing off with a golf club on the North Col of the mountain despite having abandoned Harrod after helping him onto a ledge, thus confirming many prejudices about golfers.

Interesting given the recent thread when a lot of people, including me, were pretty dubious about the feasibility of mounting a rescue attempt high on Everest. I still wonder what would have happened if conditions had been bad, but it just goes to show that it can be done. As for American golfers...

It seems it was Jay White who was responsible for the accident. Instead of staying to help, he just carried on up the mountain, basically leaving Conan Harrod to die.

I've had to hold myself back for writing a most vitriolic diatribe but if the facts are what they seem to be then I do hope Jay White is made fully aware of the despicableness of his apparent actions.

Perhaps castration by golf club?? What the story seems to say is that he left him to die so he could play golf on the North Col, is that right?

It beggars belief....
