Fiennes arives at base camp for Everest attempt

The man who's so far proved unstoppable goes for the big one

After a year of preparations in tackling lesser peaks, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has reached Everest base camp ready to launch an attempt of the north face sometime over the next week.

If anyone has proved themselves as tough as old boots it's Sir Ranulph, who having notched up a string of exploratory feats, confounded pretty much everyone in completing seven marathons in seven days within months of suffering a heart attack in 2003. But in his latest challenge there's the added complication of his fear of heights "It is a good idea not to look down, except at your boots." He told the BBC's Breakfast programme this morning via video phone from base camp.

The explorer told the Beeb that he hoped to have started out on the climb in the next two to three days.

Typically for Fiennes this isn't just an exercise in vanity climbing, the aim of the summit attempt is to raise £2m for the British Heart Foundation, with the cash going to a special unit for children with heart disease at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. If you want to chip in with the effort from the relative comfort of your desk you can do so here.

We'll keep you posted with how he gets on.

Although I applaud the achievements of Sir Ranulph, he is a VERY arrogant man.

It's very interesting to compare the modesty of Alan Hinkes to arrogance of Sir Ranulph, two men who are very close to achieving their own considerable goals..............

Stick Hempleman Adams in there too, then remove the furniture and breakables as the personalities clash.
All these peolple are driven, that manifests itself externally and internally, confidence and arrogance can overlap.
I'm glad these people are around, the Brunells, Livingstones, Shackletons of today.
While the rest of the poulation is happy to sit in a middle management job in the service industry, at least they're trying.

I agree. he is arrogance, but it's what helped him succeed. I like it. At least he's up front about being arrogant, he's never tried to hide it :o)

Good luck to him I say. He's there raising a lot of cash for Charideeee!

Hinkes is probably equally as arrogant, he just doesn't show it so much.
