A somewhat bizarre story out of Africa where Tanzania has
apparently accused Kenya's tourism minister of trying to trick
tourists into thinking that Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is in
Kenya.
According to this
story in the Telegraph, Morris Dzoro, the Kenyan minister, told a
travel agents' conference that Kili' was among the top tourist
attractions in Kenya, whereas in fact the mountain lies 20 miles
inside Tanzania.
The crux of the matter seems to be that Kenya hopes to persuade
tourists to fly into Nairobi airport to the benefit of the local
economy rather than using the purpose-built airport beneath
Kilimanjaro itself.
"He is just trying to hijack our tourists and take their money for
his own country," said Mustapha Akunaay, the executive director of
the Tanzanian Association of Tour Operators. according to the
Telegraph.
So, for the record, all OMers should be aware that Kilimanjaro is
in Tanzania. But where exactly is Mount Kenya?
